JERUSALEM, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Middle East envoy Wu Sike on Wednesday met with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor in Jerusalem. They discussed Sino-Israeli relations and the current status of the Middle East peace process.China has consistently advocated that all concerned parties settle their differences through negotiations, and achieve comprehensive peace in this region, said Wu. The direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which started early September, is an important opportunity in the peace process, and has firm support from China, he added.Wu said that China is deeply concerned about the present stalemate in the talks. Chinese government calls for efforts from all parties to show flexibility and compromise on various issues, including settlement construction, so as to put the negotiation back on track, reach a final-status agreement, and realize peaceful coexistence between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.Meridor speaks highly of the active role China has played in promoting the Middle East peace process. Israel is now working to achieve the two-state solution, he said, adding that his government is willing to coordinate with other parties and find a solution to break the deadlock in direct talks.Israel is the second leg of Wu's Middle East tour, which will take him also to Palestinian territories, Egypt and Turkey.Israel and the Palestinians resumed direct negotiations on September 2 in the United States. However, the talks were halted when Israeli settlers restarted building in the West Bank after Sept. 26, when a 10-month settlement freeze ended. The Palestinian National Authority has made clear that it will enter the parley only if Israeli government extends the moratorium.

BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday called upon Chinese industrial firms to improve the quality of their products as part of the efforts to transform China's economic growth pattern.Chinese enterprises should boost the quality of industrial products by upgrading their technologies and establishing a quality-based credit system of enterprises, said Zhang at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products.He also called for accelerating the establishment of industrial standardization system, actively taking part in drafting and revising of related international standards and establishing a reward and punishment system that favors firms that manufacture high-quality products.Zhang also urged China's domestic firms to step up efforts to nurture indigenous brands to make "made in China" a byword for high-quality products. 

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new round of reform to realize a good governance as the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) is planning the country's roadmap in the coming five years, scholars and political observers have said.The 17th CPC Central Committee opened its fifth plenary session in Beijing Friday to discuss the 12th five-year program (2011-2015), which will unveil a new round of comprehensive reform, including both economic and political reforms, said Yu Keping, a prominent theorist, in an interview with Xinhua."Only with constant reforms and innovations can China build a good government for good governance," said Yu, who now serves as deputy director of the CPC Central Compilation and Translation Bureau.Yu is well versed in the research of political system. His famous works including the article Democracy Is A Good Thing, which has been widely circulated and sparked heated discussions home and abroad.By exercising democracy in elections, decision-making, management and supervision and guaranteeing the people's rights to be informed, to participate, to be heard and to oversee, the ruling party and the government are emancipating themselves and stepping up governance reform for good governance, Yu said.Observers believe the 12th five-year program will go beyond plans of economic and social development to involve administrative, political, social and cultural restructuring.Wang Yukai, a professor at the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Governance, said the country's next five-year program will become a major step on the road to build an effective and accountable government."Good governance is a guarantee for CPC to remain in power," Wang said.Hu Angang, director of the Center for China Studies, a top think tank for policy-making under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University, said the Scientific Outlook on Development would be carried out in an all-round way in the next five years.The Scientific Outlook on Development was proposed by the CPC in 2003, against the backdrop of rapid economic growth and a series of problems including excessive consumption of resources, damages to the environment and a widening gap between the rich and poor. BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Monday China hopes to work with Norway to boost bilateral economic and trade cooperation.Xi told visiting Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Stoere he hopes the two countries will expand cooperation in areas such as shipping, fisheries, energy, environmental protection and the Arctic.Xi said as long as the two nations respect each other and especially respect each other's core interests and major concerns, China-Norway relations will develop in a healthy way.Stoere expressed appreciation for China's achievements in social and economic progress, saying that the Norwegian government will increase cooperation with China in politics, economics, culture, science and technology, energy and finance.Norway hopes to sign a free trade agreement with China, Stoere added.Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi held talks with Stoere earlier Monday.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides due to heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi have claimed 33 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 remain missing, local authorities said Wednesday.Meanwhile, more than 1 million people were affected and 78,400 people in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, the provincial flood control headquarters said in a statement.In addition, rainstorms and and geological disasters have destroyed more than 1,400 homes and inundated more than 30,000 hectares of cropland, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 2 billion yuan (300 million yuan), it said.Some areas in Guangdong reported precipitation of over 640 mm in 24 hours, it said.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.
