(KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. ENCINITAS (CNS) - A cyclist was killed Saturday when he collided with a vehicle at an Encinitas intersection, authorities said.The collision happened at about 11:49 a.m. when a cyclist was struck by a vehicle that was turning right from westbound Leucadia Boulevard to Moonstone Court, according to Deputy Eric Rader of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Bystanders gave medical aid to the victim, Rader said.The injured cyclist was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he died of his injuries, the deputy said.Deputies with the department's Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the accident. 652

ESPN is expected to cut at least another 100 employees after Thanksgiving, marking the company's third round of layoffs in the last three years, Sports Illustrated reported on Thursday. According to SI, the layoffs are expected to include several anchors from ESPN's longest-running program "SportsCenter." The layoffs are also expected to include other employees such as producers, executives and other staffers, SI reported. The layoffs to end 2017 come just seven months after ESPN laid off nearly 100 reporters from its roster. Among those laid off were basketball reporter Andy Katz, baseball reporter Jayson Stark and SportsCenter anchor Jay Crawford, to name a few. In 2015, ESPN laid off 300 employees, most of whom were behind the scenes staff. In recent years, ESPN has had to combat rising fees to carry live sports, coupled with a decline in cable television subscriptions. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido Police requested the public’s assistance Monday to find the driver responsible of a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist. The incident happened Oct. 16 at 4:38 p.m. in the 200 block of W. Washington Ave., police said. A man driving a white Ford F-150 pickup truck struck the motorcyclist and left the scene, according to investigators. Police said the man was in his late 30s, Hispanic, and had a mustache. He was wearing a gray shirt and baseball cap. There was a woman in the passenger seat and a child sitting between them. The first two digits on the license plate may be 8F. Police said the Ford F-150 will have damage to the rear passenger side tail light and tailgate. ENCINITAS, California — A California woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at a Shell gas station in North County, California."I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat were a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers."I was the fourth person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," Alice said.Then this past Wednesday, she was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar. It was another new GMC Yukon.Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring."I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" Alice said.She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2115
