CLEVELAND — Sex toys, envelopes and craft supplies are among the products Ohio workers say their companies continue to make or distribute under the protection of being so-called "essential employers" as most businesses across the state have shut down during the Coronavirus outbreak.Workers are raising concerns about their health and safety and remain skeptical whether employers are finding loopholes during Ohio's stay at home order issued by Gov. DeWine requiring non-essential businesses to close as of Monday night."I'm afraid of being fired if I don't come to work," said one employee at AmeriMark, a Cleveland-based direct marketer of women's apparel, shoes, cosmetics and health related merchandise --including more than 30 sex toys included in its "health living essentials."The company also distributes wrist blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, glucose monitors and wheelchairs. The Ohio Department of Health's "Stay at Home Order" specifically includes "distributors of medical equipment."In a recorded message to its employees, workers are being told, "We are happy to report AmeriMark will remain in operation during this period...in this unparalleled time, we are excited to serve AmeriMark customers."The company has not yet responded to our inquiry."My concern is that there are a lot of elderly women working here," said another worker concerned about passing the virus from person to person.The State's StanceDuring Tuesday's news conference, Lt. Governor Jon Husted acknowledged confusion over the definition of an "essential business" and referred employers to Ohio's coronavirus website."It's written in plain language, we ask you to follow the language and use your best judgment," said Husted. COVID-19 isn't the only concern with the upcoming election.The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are warning local governments about possible ransomware attacks, something like malicious software blocking officials from access to voting systems.Experts think that is more of a likely scenario than altering actual votes.“The only way to ensure confidence is to demonstrate that you've done everything you possibly can to facilitate that safe and secure election,” said Maya Worman, Executive Director of Election Cyber Surge Initiative.The initiative is led by the University of Chicago. It’s pairing local election officials with volunteer cyber security experts to address specific areas of cyber security concerns.“And the biggie, I think, is human error, user error, whether that is accidentally sending sensitive information to the wrong person, not having a strong password management system, sharing passwords,” said Worman.The pandemic is adding further complications, with just more than 90 days to go.Worman says they felt the urgency to be proactive in helping election officials.“Now, we’ve got so many people working from home on their own devices,” said Worman. “An organization has no insight into what the security around your home, Wi-Fi or home devices, is.”This free resource is invaluable for elections. That is at least 40% of all U.S. coronavirus deaths.The White House put in new measures recently to better protect residents.“The numbers are continuing to rise. We're just beginning to get some of the numbers out of some of the states and so this is a real outrage,” said Bill Sweeney, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at AARP. “It didn't have to be this way, and this is a national disgrace.”AARP says required virus case data from facilities is happening too late. They're about a week behind and testing isn't consistent.Some facilities are still having issues with PPE, including training staff to wear it properly.Both Republicans and Democrats want to give more help to nursing homes in the next relief bill.AARP is concerned about the lack of inspections and oversight. It worries some facilities will get immunity from lawsuits.“Without inspections, without the ombudsman being able to go in and find out what’s going on in the facilities, without family visits being allowed, there's been no accountability at all and if they give immunity to these nursing homes, there won’t ever be accountability,” said Sweeney. “There will never be justice for families whose loved ones were treated poorly.”Before the pandemic, AARP says eight out of ten nursing homes were cited for infection control problems.Meanwhile, AARP encourages family members to call their representative in Congress if they are worried about their loved one and are not getting answers. 1573
