A car matching the suspect vehicle's description was later located and impounded for evidence. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his left torso, which was not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said. The suspected gunman was described as a 5-foot-7 Black man, about 140 pounds, wearing blue sweatpants. 839

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Friday identified a 44-year-old man who was found fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Encanto area of San Diego. The man was identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson, of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department reported.Officers found Johnson about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Varney and Theodore drives, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department. After police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the area, officers reported finding him slumped over in the vehicle suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said San Diego police Lt. The suspect got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at the victim," Dobbs said. "The suspect then got back into this vehicle and drove away.'The suspect was wearing dark clothing and seen driving westbound on Varney in a white four-door vehicle, he said. The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit urged anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1236

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Pride and its associated congregations rebuked the United Methodist Church Thursday for its recent decision to maintain its bans on same-sex marriages and LGBTQ clergy. The United Methodist Church announced the decision Tuesday at its General Conference after a group of international delegates voted in favor of maintaining the church's current rules. The delegates also voted down a new set of proposed rules that would have let each church decide how to handle issues of sex and gender.``The traditionalists within the United Methodist Church have chosen to exclude and marginalize LGBTQIA+ Christians whose only desire is to serve their church and express the Love of God in the world,'' said Brandan Robertson, the lead pastor at Missiongathering Christian Church. ``Nothing could be more antithetical to the message Jesus embodied and proclaimed.''According to San Diego Pride, 65 percent of people in the LGBTQ community identify as religious or spiritual in some way. The organization runs an interfaith coalition called DevOUT and hosts an annual interfaith service at St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate tolerance of faith and sexuality.``This week was hard for many who have worked with determination for so long to help the United Methodist Church join the many other open and affirming congregations and faith institutions around the world in their full embrace of the LGBTQ community,'' said San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Lopez. ``We stand in solidarity with those who continue to fight for their place within their own families and faith.'' 1602

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt will change its home port from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, ahead of scheduled maintenance slated for next summer, the Navy announced Wednesday. The ship, which is currently deployed in the Western Pacific, will enter Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for scheduled maintenance known as docking planned incremental availability, or DPIA.Lt. Travis Callaghan said the maintenance required to maintain the Nimitz-class carrier's service life is more involved than what can be done pier- side in San Diego. DPIA involves putting the ship in drydock and will require facilities, equipment and personnel available in Bremerton, Callaghan said. The carrier recently resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo- Pacific after spending months docked in Guam due to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak aboard the ship. The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.Navy officials said the carrier now operates with a new COVID-19 standard operating procedure, which modifies how crew members move through the ship, expands meal hours and establishes new social distancing procedures. 1337
