SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police Sergeant was arrested Friday after the department was tipped off to individuals reportedly soliciting sex from minors.Police say Joseph Ruvido, 49, was arrested in Carmel Valley and charged with one felony count of soliciting sex with a minor. A search warrant was served at the 21-year veteran's residence and he was taken into custody without incident.Ruvido was assigned to the SDPD Watch Commander's Office, approving reports and and bookings. Prior to that, Ruvido was a patrol sergeant with the department's Eastern division, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit."I assure you Sgt. Ruvido will be held accountable both criminally and administratively," Nisleit said. "We take this very, very seriously."Watch the SDPD press conference below:"It is very embarrassing to have to talk about the arrest of one of our own," Nisleit added.The chief said Ruvido has been suspended without pay as the investigation continues.On Wednesday, police received a Crime Stoppers tip through the via the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit that multiple people may be soliciting sex from minors. Police identified one of the individuals as Ruvido and opened an investigation leading to his arrest.Once Ruvido was identified, investigators conducted 24/7 surveillance with investigators from the San Diego District Attorney's Office, according to SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell.SDPD declined to share any further details to protect the investigation, Nisleit said."We're going to be looking at everything," Nisleit said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A state review board will decide Tuesday whether to grant parole to a former skateboarding star from Carlsbad who has spent nearly three decades behind bars for a brutal rape and murder.Mark “Gator” Rogowski was a world champion skateboarder in the 1980’s who drew comparisons to Tony Hawk. He parlayed his fame into endorsements and promotional videos until he entered a guilty plea to the 1991 rape and murder of Jessica Bergsten, whose body was found buried in the desert.“This was a horrific, heinous, monstrous crime by an individual who really doesn’t want to admit that he took out transferred rage on another innocent individual,” said Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, who will represent the state at Tuesday’s hearing.Rogowski was denied parole in 2011 and 2016, but his case was granted another review ahead of schedule, Sachs said. The parole board will determine if Rogowski remains a threat to the community based on a psychological assessment and other factors.In a promotional video by the prison rehabilitation non-profit Getting Out by Going In (GOGI), Rogowski said he’s taken accountability for the crime and found a higher power.“My identity as a man was skewed. I thought what it meant to be a man was to be a womanizer, to have a lot of relationships,” he said.In 1991, the former skateboarding celebrity invited Bergsten to his Carlsbad apartment. Bergsten was a friend of the girl who had just dumped Rogowski.In a fit of what he called “misplaced revenge,” Rogowski clubbed the young woman over the head, cut her clothes off with scissors and sexually assaulted her for hours. When she screamed for help, Rogowski covered her with a surfboard bag and strangled her through it. He then drove two hours into the desert and buried her naked body in a shallow grave.“Certain crimes are so horrible they shock the conscience and this is one of them,” Sachs said.Sachs said prosecutors will strongly oppose parole on public safety grounds, although he acknowledged he could not predict the board's decision. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism.It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. His brave actions have since been recognized many times. He was on his way to get lunch with his family when he heard an active shooter call on the scanner. Moments later, he spotted the suspect. Without backup, he convinced the Poway Synagogue shooter to surrender. Officer Wiese took him into custody.Wiese says his competitive spirit motivates him to be a better version of himself every day, to show resilience and strength for his community."If you feel like you're going to win, then incidents like this, like at Sunset Cliffs, 'I'm going to win this incident. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An apologetic teenage girl explained how she crashed her mother’s car into her neighbor’s garage in Encanto Friday.13-year-old Akasha Alexander had been taught how to start the BMW in the morning to help her mother. On Friday, the car was parked a big too close to the edge of a steep hill.The girl pulled the clutch and the car took off, crashing through the neighbor’s fence, clipping a water line, and ending up in the garage.“I see the fence go down and i'm like, oh no, and then all I see is boom,” said Alexander.Neighbor Melvin Glover’s daughter and grandchildren are visiting him for Easter. They said the impact shook the Glover home and frightened them all.The car was towed from the home.Alexander said she plans to bake Glover a red velvet cake. 784
