When guests check in to Magnolia Hotel in downtown Denver, they’re greeted by new safety measures and staff cleaning more often. From social distancing markers on the floor to hand sanitizer at the door ,this is the new norm for hotels operating during a pandemic. “It’s been very difficult in hospitality with COVID-19,” said Sarah Treadway, president and co-CEO of Stout Street Hospitality and Magnolia Hotels, a hospitality company with hotels across the country which had to lay off 95% of its employees during the COVID-19 crisis. “Many of our employees have worked for us for more than 30 years,” Treadway said. “So, it’s been devastating.” It’s devastating both emotionally and financially as coronavirus concerns have closed down thousands of hotels around the world. “A lot of people are feeling a lot of pain,” said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Rogers says about two thirds of all hotels have laid off at least half of their workers. He added that many hotels that closed due to COVID-19 might never reopen. “In fact, the experts say the industry will not fully recover until 2023,” Rogers said. To hopefully help expedite that timeline, industry leaders are now focusing on ne-w safety standards. Marriott International is rolling out a new Commitment to Clean Program which claims to go above and beyond normal protocols. In Las Vegas, a city with 150,000 hotel rooms, MGM Resorts has started working with medical experts to develop a plan that will allow them to safely welcome guests back. Back at Magnolia Hotels, their increase attention to details is paying off. “I’m very proud to say none of our staff members have come down with COVID-19 because of our cleanliness standards from the beginning,” Treadway said. This extra cleaning, however, comes at a cost. But it’s a price guests say is well worth it.“I think they’re even stepping beyond what the protocol would ask them to do right now,” one guest said. “I think they’re doing great.” 2024

A 3-year-old boy died after falling into a restaurant grease trap Monday morning in Rochester, New York, police said.Rochester Police Department Investigator Francis Camp said they believe the boy fell through a plastic lid that gave way and into the grease trap embedded in the ground outside a Tim Hortons restaurant. The grease trap was covered with a green plastic lid -- much like a manhole cover -- that helped it blend into the surrounding grass, he said."The lid was on there, it looks like the child ran across it and it popped open and he fell into the trap," he said. The grease trap is 2-and-a-half feet in diameter, according to police.Camp said a witness found the child in the grease trap minutes after he was reported missing. The witness saw the boy and pulled him from the trap and started administering CPR, Camp said. The boy's name has not been released.Attempts were made to revive the boy but they were unsuccessful, according to Camp."We have a horrifying episode here that happened today," he said. "We're asked all the time, 'What's the worst thing you encounter as a police officer?' and this is number one."The medical examiner's office told CNN the cause of death will be released in coming days. The city is currently pouring concrete around the opening in the ground where the grease trap was located and putting a metal lid on it, according to Camp.CNN reached out to the NY Buildings Administrative Enforcement Unit to ask if this location's grease interceptor was up to code.Tim Hortons provided CNN with the following statement:"What occurred today was a tragedy and on behalf of the Tim Hortons family, we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young boy who passed away. Tim Hortons is fully cooperating with authorities. As there is an ongoing police investigation, we have no further comment at this time."Camp said police will be following up with the DA's office, OSHA and the medical examiner's office.A 3-year-old child died in Auburn, Alabama, after falling into a grease pit in October 2017 while on a family outing at an 2099

Thousands, if not millions, of employees have suddenly found themselves without work this week as businesses are scaling back operations amid the spread of coronavirus. As states are ordering non-essential employees to stay away from their jobs, unemployment is skyrocketing nationally. For instance, in Ohio, the state went from 5,000 unemployment claims last week to 140,000 claims this week. But as some industries dwindle, others are in need of help. Here are a few: 7-Eleven Convenience store 7-Eleven said it is actively seeking to fill 20,000 positions amid a rush to clear store shelves. 7-Eleven said it expects to encounter a rush of orders through its mobile app, and are looking for store clerks to help fulfill delivery orders. "7-Eleven is a neighborhood store and it's our priority to serve the communities in which we operate during this unprecedented crisis," said 7-Eleven President and Chief Executive Officer Joe DePinto. "Between 7-Eleven, Inc. and our franchised business owners, we expect as many as 20,000 store employees to be hired in the coming months. This will provide job opportunities and ensure 7-Eleven stores remain clean and in-stock with the goods our customers need during this critical time." To apply with 7-Eleven, click 1276
