NEW YORK — The iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade won't march through Manhattan this year as it traditionally has for decades, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.In a statement, Macy's said that while it won't be able to utilize its traditional parade route, the event will still be broadcast nationwide on Thanksgiving morning. The made-for-TV special will showcase all the balloons, floats and performances of the parade from Herald Square in Manhattan, and will still be capped off with an appearance by Santa Claus.While the country continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, de Blasio said large gatherings like parades still have to wait."It will not be the same parade we're used to," the mayor said. "It will be a different kind of event. They're reinventing the event for this moment in history."De Blasio assured that people will still be able to feel "the spirit and joy" of the event that day both on television and online."Not a live parade, but something that will really give us that warmth and that great feeling we have on Thanksgiving day," he said.Macy's and the city previously worked to reinvent their iconic Fourth of July fireworks display over this past summer.Other changes to the parade include:Balloons anchored to vehicles instead of held by attendantsNo participants under 18 years oldNo appearances by high school or college bands. NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. has surpassed 1 million new confirmed coronavirus cases in just the first 10 days of November, with more than 100,000 cases each day becoming the norm in a surge that shows no signs of slowing. The latest surge in U.S. coronavirus cases appears to be much larger than the two previous ones, and it is all but certain to get worse. Deaths are climbing again, reaching an average of more than 930 a day. However, experts say medical and testing advances give them reason to believe the nation is better able to deal with the virus this time. On Monday, the number of coronavirus cases in the US passed 10 million since the start of the pandemic.Despite a rise in recorded cases, the University of Washington's IHME model projects up to 2,000 coronavirus-related deaths per day by the end of December. During the height of the pandemic in April, the US roughly averaged 2,000 coronavirus-related deaths per day. 942

New York City is painting the town…white! But the paint isn’t for aesthetics. The city is coating rooftops in order to reduce the internal temperature of a building by 30 percent."Painting a rooftop reflects the sun's radiant energy on the building,” explains Gregg Bishop, commissioner with NYC Small Business Services.Bishop says this reduces air conditioning costs.The initiative is called Cool Roofs. Officials say the initiative is helping to reduce the impact New York has on the climate, while lowering energy costs."Here in the city, we're facing temperatures that can be up to 22 degrees hotter than surrounding rural and suburban areas," says Jainey Bavishi, with the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency.Since the program launched, they've covered 9 million square feet of rooftops.A similar initiative launched recently in Los Angeles, where they're testing reflective streets. The trend is growing. Academic research shows reflective surfaces do make a difference."What some of my own work has found out is that cool roofs are actually very effective at decreasing, for example, summertime temperatures, on the order of 1 to 3 degrees which is quite significant," explains Dr. Matei Georgescu, with the Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University.While there are definitely benefits to making surfaces like this rooftop reflective, researchers say there may be some downsides as well."If you deploy highly reflective roofs, you're now assuming high reflectivity during the entire winter,” says Dr. Georgescu. “In other words, you're making things a lot colder than normally they would have been.”Dr. Georgescu studies reflective surfaces and says it could mean higher heating costs in the winter."We don't wanna give back 50 percent of these benefits during the winter."He says a possible solution might be reflective covers that would be removable during cold months.The city says any higher heating bills in the winter have been negligible. NEW YORK CITY — A shark washed up on Rockaway Beach in Queens on Monday afternoon, just days before the scheduled reopening of New York City beaches for swimming.The shark appears to have been injured after being caught up on a jetty, a Parks Department spokesperson said. The shark has since died.Parks staff removed the shark's body from the beach."We kindly ask New Yorkers to respect the space of any wild animal and appreciate them from a distance," the spokesperson said. "If you see a wild animal, report the sighting to the WildlifeNYC website."There are about 25 species of sharks in the waters off of New York, according to New York Aquarium Director Jon Dohlin. All day, every day streets are filled with cars, but for one day, busy streets will be car-free.In celebration of Earth Day, 30 blocks of New York City will only be open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Broadway will be closed to car traffic between Times Square and Union Square.Within those streets, several programs and activities will be made available to visitors, including fitness classes, performances and other activities.Citi Bike is also offering free day passes through its app.The goal is to encourage people to choose more environmentally-friendly methods of transportation.A portion of Washington Heights will also be closed between West 181st and West 190th streets on St. Nicholas Avenue.  785
