PETERSBURG, Russia, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong stopped by the St. Petersburg 652 primary and middle school on Sunday, speaking highly of the school 's efforts to promote Sino-Russian cultural exchange.Liu appreciated the school's achievements in Chinese language teaching, as the school has been teaching Chinese as the first foreign language for 53 years.Language is a bridge between different nations, Liu said. MOSCOW, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin here on Tuesday, exchanging views with the Russian side on the current situation of the Korean Peninsula.The two sides reached consensus on the issue, saying both China and Russia urged the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to jointly mitigate tensions on the peninsula and to resume direct dialogue at an early date.Escalating tensions on the peninsula may even trigger a war, which is absolute not in line with the interests of the relevant sides including Russia, the United States and Japan, the two diplomats said in a joint statement.The ROK and the DPRK are the most susceptible if the war broke out, the statement added.China and Russia will never allow any war on the peninsula, or the lingering tensions between the two countries. Thus, China and Russia will continue to further cooperation and coordination on the issue and to push forward the direct dialogue between the ROK and the DPRK, the diplomats said.They said China and Russia are calling for joint efforts from relevant sides to stabilize the situation on the peninsula and not to impair peace, safety or stability.The two sides also reiterated that the six-party talks were proved to be the most realistic and most effective solution to solving the problem.Currently, emergency consultations among the heads of delegations to the six-party talks are in urgent need, they added.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six- party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue involve China, the United States, the DPRK, the ROK, Russia and Japan.The two sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties, including high-level exchanges, the overall promotion of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, and several other issues.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese state councilor said on Friday that the Confucius Institute is facing a "new starting point", calling for increased cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries via the institution.While addressing the opening ceremony of the fifth conference of Confucius Institutes in Beijing, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said that the institute is being offered new opportunity given exchanges of the diverse cultures in the world and China's wider opening-up."After five years' development, the Confucius Institute is now standing at a new starting point," said Liu, also president of the Confucius Institute headquarters council.The Confucius Institute, named after ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, is a non-profit public institution which aims to promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries.Up to now, China has set up more than 320 Confucius Institutes in 96 countries around the globe since the first one was established in 2004, said Liu.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also attended the opening ceremony of the annual conference.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) - China's urbanization would boost domestic demand by 30 trillion yuan (4.5 trillion U.S. dollars) by 2030, an official from a top think tank said Saturday.The country's urbanization expansion promises a huge potential in domestic demand, which will assure a stable economic development for China even if exports decline, Han Jun, vice director with the State Council's Development Research Center (SCDRC), said at a forum, adding that the urban migrants' demand for housing is likely to become the largest driving force for China's economic growth in the future.Additionally, Han noted that the core issue in China's urbanization is to allow farmers-turned-migrant workers to become permanent urban residents.In the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015), which was issued last month, authorities stressed that accelerating urbanization would be an important mission during the next five years.Data from the SCDRC indicates that China's urbanization rate hit 46 percent by the end of 2009, and will reach 63.6 percent by 2030, with the urban population standing at 930 million.
