CONAKRY, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Guinean President Alpha Conde said Monday while meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that Guinea hopes to expand cooperation with China in a wide range of fields.Conde said Guinea values the traditional friendship with China, is grateful to China's assistance to Guinea under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and appreciates the contribution China has made to the peace and common development of the world as well as the recovery of world economy from the global financial crisis.He reiterated Guinea's adherence to the one-China policy, and said the country is willing to learn from China's development experiences. Guinea hopes to further expand cooperation with China in such fields as water resources management, electricity generation and infrastructure building, said the president, who also welcomed Chinese companies to invest in Guinea.Also in a meeting with the visiting Chinese foreign minister, Guinea's Prime Minister Mohamed Said Fofana thanked China for sending medical teams to Guinea, helping Guinea train personnel in various sectors and constructing a series of aid projects in the African country. Fofana said Guinea expects to carry out all- around and mutually beneficial cooperation with China.For his part, the Chinese foreign minister said China-Guinea relations have been enjoying healthy and stable development throughout a period of over half a century, featuring political equality, mutual benefit and friendship.Yang said China has always been supporting Guinea's strive for peace and stability, and offering assistance for Guinea in social and economic development. BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- A researcher with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) said Wednesday that plant hormones, if used properly, are not a risk to human health."Irregular use of plant growth substances may cause plants to grow excessively fast or affect the taste, but will not cause harm to human health," Ye Zhihua said in an interview with Xinhua.His remarks come after media reports in China about "exploding watermelons," caused by the excessive use of phytohormone, have aroused public concern over the safety of hormones that stimulate plant growth.Ye said plant hormones used to promote growth have the same or similar effects as natural plant hormones, and fruit and vegetables sold at the market carried limited residue of the hormones.More than 100 types of plant hormones, such as ethephon and gibberellin acid, are used in agriculture and forestry sectors around the world, Ye said, adding 38 types of plant hormones have been registered in China.For example, seven plant hormones including thidiazuron and nucleotide are approved for use on cucumbers in China. The purpose is to stimulate the growth of female flowers and increase fruit yields, Ye said.Ye added that China places plant hormones in the category of pesticides control, which means the hormones are subject to strict management from production to utilization.

BAODING, Hebei, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday called for efforts to promote welfare for senior citizens and vowed to improve the country's health care system to make medical services more affordable.Hu made the call during a three-day inspection tour in Baoding City of northern province of Hebei starting on Tuesday, during which he visited orphans, talked to senior citizens and extended festival greetings to local residents.At a nursing center in Shunping County of Baoding City, Hu offered New Year greetings to senior citizens, orphans and staff of the center.Hu wished the senior citizens good health and a long life, encouraged orphans to study hard, and thanked the staff for the care given to the aged.The Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government will make strenuous efforts to improve the welfare of seniors and make sure their difficulties are solved and they have access to better services, Hu said.When visiting Zhao Helou, a Baoding retiree who has been hospitalized several times and living in difficult circumstances, Hu promised assistance from the Party and the government to help Zhao tide over her problems.The health care and medical insurance system would be improved in the future to tackle people's difficulties in medical care, Hu promised.During his visit to Baoding, Hu also inspected drought conditions at wheat fields, joined villagers during New Year celebrations and extended Spring Festival greetings to passengers, station workers and volunteers.Hu, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, was briefed on the work of Hebei's provincial committee of the CPC and the provincial government during his tour.

TOKYO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Sunday that Japan is ready to reconstruct relations with China in cultural, economic, political and other areas, the Jiji Press reported."This year marks the 100th anniversary of China's Revolution of 1911, and next year will be the 40th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations," said Kan at the first session of the "China-issue" advisory committee, organized by the Japanese government and attended by personages from economic, cultural and academic circles."On this special occasion," Kan said, "Japan is ready to rebuild relations with China in various areas such as culture, economic and politics."According to local media reports, participants at the meeting put forward suggestions such as "China is a promising market in the economic area, and ties with China are thus of great importance" and "people-to-people exchanges need to be promoted in areas of culture, sports and arts."The committee is scheduled to submit the final advisory report to the government in mid-April.
