SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Gun control activists filled Balboa Park Thursday, demanding gun control for the safety of students.Wendy Wheatcroft, the director of "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America, says the event was in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.  As a mother of three, she was horrified.“I want to be able to do everything in my power to make sure they grow up in a safe environment,” Wheatcroft said.RELATED: Victims of Parkland shootingWheatcroft says California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and should be the model for the federal level.“In California, we have a gun law called the gun violence restraining order and this allows people to remove weapons from someone they deem to be a threat to themselves or others,” she said.  “If they had this law in Florida, they could have prevented this from happening.”RELATED: Vigil held for Parkland shooting victimsJim Miller is with the San Diego Gun Owner’s Political Action Committee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release.If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. We will not tolerate the intimidation or violent interference with protesters or a journalist who are exercising their First Amendment rights.” 1492

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For decades Veterans Village of San Diego has been committed to serving homeless veterans, aiding in transitional housing and rehabilitation. In recent years, however, they've been struggling to fill vacant beds."Over the last several years, we've just seen a change in the environment. There's a lot of resources here in San Diego for homeless veterans. The number of veterans who've wanted to come through our programs has decreased," said Kim Mitchell, President and CEO of Veterans Village. "Some just aren't ready, as you know there's are a lot of homeless here in San Diego, not only veterans but non-veterans, people are in various stages of where they are in life."Now the nonprofit hopes to welcome non-veterans into two of their programs: County-funded Drug Medi-Cal and the transitional housing program. "There is a lot of people that want to get off the street and want to go through a program to get clean and sober, and so if we have beds in this program that can help them do that we want to do that," said Mitchell.Mitchell says they have full support from the Housing Commission and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.Leaders will ask City Council on Tuesday to approve the request. If approved, the nonprofit could serve non-veterans within weeks. 1297

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homicide investigators have been assigned to look into a deadly fire in Logan Heights that claimed three lives. According to the San Diego Police Department, the investigators have been assigned “out of an abundance of caution.”Investigators will work closely with the metro arson strike team also looking into the incident, the department says. The fire started at a home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. The family’s oldest son, a 26-year-old, was unharmed in the fire. The 26-year-old said he awoke Sunday morning to find his bed on fire. The man told 10News he tried yelling at his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," said Wilber Romero.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside the home to pull many of the victims out.A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire. 1355

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite the early morning wake-up call, San Diegans still got out to catch NASA's first interplanetary rocket launch from the West Coast.San Diegans unfazed by the 4 a.m. start time broke out their cameras and looked up to the sky to catch the Atlas 5 rocket take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base just north.Some users took to Instagram, others to our 10News Weather Watchers Facebook page. Either way, photographers were happy to get out of bed and watch as the rocket soared through the morning sky.Here's a look at the view from the lens' of our local photographers:There was a slight worry over fog clouding the view for San Diegans, but clearly, those worries evaporated once the launch was given the all-clear.Atlas 5 and the InSight rocket are set to arrive at Mars on Nov. 26, 2018, around 12 p.m. Yup, NASA is that exact about the time.For two years, the InSight mission's lander and two satellites will research how the planet's terrain is formed, seismic activity, and how meteorites have affected the surface.If you happened to miss the launch of Atlas 5, we streamed it early Saturday morning on our 10News Facebook page: 1203
