MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Saturday broke ground for a China-funded convention center in Montego Bay, north of Jamaica.     At the ceremony, Xi described the amity between China and Jamaica with a Chinese saying which says bosom friends stay close at heart though thousands of miles apart.     The China-Jamaica friendly partnership for common development, established in 2005, has led the bilateral cooperation into a new stage as mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples were deepened and cooperation in various fields achieved remarkable progress, Xi said. BEIJING, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, on Friday expressed strong indignation and opposition to a European Parliament resolution on Tibet.     "We are strongly indignant with and opposed to the act that intervenes in China's internal affairs, damages China-Europe relations and hurts the Chinese people's feelings," the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee said in a statement.     Regardless of China's repeated stern representation, the European Parliament, stirred up by a few of its members, insisted on approving a resolution on Tibet, which distorts the facts and again encourages the ** Lama's separatist practice, in an attempt to internationalize the Tibet-related issues," said the statement.     Tibet is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory and Tibetan affairs are purely China's domestic affairs, the statement said, adding that any foreign government and organization does not have the right to intervene in China's internal affairs.     The Tibet Autonomous Region has achieved economic development, national unity and social harmony and people there have been living and working in peace since the democratic reforms 50 years ago, the statement said.     Over the past few years, the Chinese central government has carried out a number of contacts and dialogues with patience and sincerity with the ** Lama's representatives.     However, as the ** Lama has not stopped his separatist activities, no substantial progress was made through the dialogues.     ** Lama's Memorandum on Genuine Autonomy for the Tibetan People, under the veil of claiming autonomy, actually seeks political independence for Tibet and runs against China's Constitution. It will be inevitably opposed by all the Chinese people, the statement said.     The ** Lama claimed that rather than seeking for "Tibet independence ", he only asked for "high degree of autonomy" and "genuine autonomy" and insisted on "nonviolence".     However, ** Lama's so-called "genuine autonomy" aimed to restore his reign in Tibet that integrating religion and state, and establish a supposed "greater Tibet area" which covers nearly a quarter of China's territory. The so-called "greater Tibet area" does not exist in history, nor does it have an actual ground     The claim also asked the Chinese central government to withdraw armies and all the non-Tibetans from the "greater Tibet area". The essence of these claims is advocating "Tibet independence " or meant for "gradual or covert Tibet independence," the statement said.     The ** Lama claimed that he insisted on "nonviolence", but the violent riots in Lhasa staged by the ** Lama's followers on March 14 last year proved that they have never stopped violent activities.     The allegations of the ** Lama were only disguise for his separatist stance and violent criminal activities. They were also packaging to defraud the international society of sympathy and support, the statement said.     "Our disputes with the ** Lama is neither the ethnic issue, nor religious issue, or human rights, but a major principled issue concerning China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, " it said.     The Chinese central government's policy toward the ** Lama is consistent and clear cut, the statement said, adding the door is always open for contacts and talks with him.     The key for positive progresses of contacts and talks rest with whether the ** Lama would give up his wrong stance and separatist behaviors, reexamine his political opinions and make aright choice beneficial to the country, the people, the history and himself.     The statement also said, it is in line with the common interest of China and the Europe to enhance mutual beneficial cooperation on an equal footing.     "A handful European parliament members, who hold prejudice against China, have very readily and repeatedly proposed groundless resolutions on Tibet-related issues," it said.     These resolutions deliberately slandered against China's image, sent wrong signals to the ** Lama's supporters and boost arrogance of the pro-Tibet campaigners.     These European parliament members should be warned sternly to get a clear understanding of the situation and respect the facts. Any conspiracies to interfere in China's internal affairs are doomed to fail, it said.     The NPC values relations with the European parliament and requests the European parliament to proceed from the overall interest of China-EU relations, discard ideological prejudice, adopt a fair and objective stance and do more things that conducive to the healthy development of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, said the statement.     Also on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu urged the European Parliament to confirm to the public opinions, immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs using the Tibet-related issue and work with China to maintain the overall situation of China-EU relations.

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday again lodged urgent representations to the Russian Minister Counsellor to China in regards to the sinking of a Chinese cargo ship in Russian waters.     The Sierra Leone-flagged vessel named "New Star" sank off the waters near Russia's far-eastern port of Vladivostok on Sunday. Seven Chinese crew members were still missing.     China paid great attention to media reports that the ship sank after a Russian Coast Guard cruiser fired at it, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a news release.     Jiang said China had urged the Russian side to spare no efforts to help search for the missing crew members and make thorough investigations to find out the causes of the incident as soon as possible.     The Chinese embassy in Russia and consulate general in Khabarovsk also made representations to Russia at the same time, Jiang noted.     "Russia attached great importance to China's concern," said Jiang, adding that relevant Russian department is investigating the conduct of law enforcement agencies involved in the incident and will inform China of the results in time.

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- China, the world's biggest manufacturer of electronics and information technology (IT) products, said Wednesday it will boost the industry's development to create more than 1.5 million new jobs in three years.     The electronics and IT sector is expected to contribute at least 0.7 percentage points to China's annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth from 2009 to 2011, compared with 0.8 percentage points last year, according to a document approved by the State Council and published on the government Web site.     That will provide new jobs for nearly 1 million college graduates, which are included in the total 1.5 million targeted vacancies, said the document.     China's electronics and IT products sales surged at an average annual rate of 28 percent from 2001 to 2007, but slowed sharply to 12.5 percent last year amid the economic downturn.     Sales in 2008 totaled 6.3 trillion yuan (920 billion U.S. dollars), with exports reaching 521.8 billion U.S. dollars, or 36.5 percent of the country's total export value.     The government announced a support plan for the industry in February. The Wednesday document made clear details of the plan.     The government will boost the industry by increasing state investment, credit support and export tax rebates, said the document.     It also pledged to expand the domestic market for the industry and encourage innovation and restructuring.     In the next three years, the country aims to achieve technological breakthroughs in strategic domains of the industry such as integrate circuits, new-type displays and software, according to the document.     For instance, revenues from software and information service sectors will take up 15 percent of the industry's total, up from the current 12 percent.     In addition, fresh growth will be cultivated in such fields as digital TVs and the new generation of mobile communications and Internet.     The government said it will vigorously promote the overseas commercial use of its domestically-developed TD-SCDMA standard for the high-speed third-generation mobile communications.

WUHAN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari arrived here Friday evening, kicking off his second China visit at the invitation of the Chinese government.     During his stay at this capital city of central China's Hubei Province, Zardari was expected to pursue Sino-Pakistani cooperation in agriculture and water conservancy. He will also meet with the local governor.     On behalf of the Chinese government, State Councilor Dai Bingguo will meet with Zardari here.     Zardari will visit the Three Gorges Project in Yichang city to study its management and technology.     Zardari was scheduled to leave Hubei for Shanghai, China's financial hub, on Sunday to continue his China tour. He was particularly interested in finance, banking, large-scale construction and Shanghai's urban development, according to the Ambassador of Pakistan to China.     China believed the visit would consolidate the two countries' all-weather friendship and deepen all-round cooperation, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said earlier.     Zardari paid his first state visit to China as guest of President Hu Jintao in October last year.
