As Fire Chief John Alston Jr. spoke to reporters in New Haven, Connecticut, about a spate of drug overdoses on Wednesday, he heard shouting coming from behind him."We're getting another call of a person," Alston said.He quickly helped coordinate the response, and then returned to the microphone.That scene occurred the same day that 76 people were believed to have overdosed on some form of K2, or synthetic marijuana, officials in New Haven said. An Elkhorn, Nebraska man accused of sending prostitutes to his neighbor's house was sentenced to four years in prison.Doug Goldsberry pleaded no contest to one count of pandering in September. On Friday, a Douglas County judge gave him the maximum penalty.The judge says Goldsberry's "screening process" by seeing how far he could get the women to go was a concern for the court.Investigators were called to a home in March. The homeowners told deputies with the Douglas County Sheriffs Office they were fearful because women identifying themselves as escorts or prostitutes had been exposing themselves and demanding money.The complaint says a family with two small children lived at the house and the women would go on their porch and strip down or lift their shirts off, and one woman urinated in their bushes.Deputies conducted surveillance and brought in two women who were seen exposing themselves at the home. The complaint says investigators were able to determine through phone records Goldsberry, who lives across the street, had sent the women and would tell them to commit the acts so he knew they weren't undercover officers.According to the complaint, Goldsberry told investigators he would watch the girls out of his kitchen window, which faced his neighbor's porch, and sometimes take pictures and would become sexually aroused. He also told investigators he would meet prostitutes at hotels, the complaint says. 1451

An Akron, Ohio man will spend at least the next 20 years in prison for selling fentanyl to a woman who overdosed on the drug and died nearly three years ago.Jurmaine A. Jeffries, 29, was convicted of distribution of fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute the drug.A jury found that the fentanyl Jeffries sold the woman resulted in her death.On Sept. 16, 2015, the day of her death, the woman texted and called Jeffries to ask about buying heroin. He responded to her messages and told her "B right there."Cell phone records placed Jeffries in the area near the woman's house on the day she died, authorities said.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, after the woman died, police used her phone to text Jeffries about buying more drugs. Police arrested him when he showed up at the woman's house with fentanyl on his person.Sentencing will take place at a later date, but Jeffries is facing a mandatory minimum of two decades in prison for his charges.“We will prosecute those who sell fentanyl and other drugs that kill our friends and neighbors,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “This defendant drove around Akron delivering poison for profit. The Akron Police Department and all our law enforcement partners did a tremendous job bringing this man to justice.” 1315

An 11-year-old boy is now safe after getting sucked into a drain during Tuesday's flooding in Harrison, Wisc.. According to officials, the boy and some of his friends were playing in a retention pond that was completely full and draining at a high rate. Apparently, the boy got some goggles so he could see where the water was draining. He then got sucked in and disappeared under water. The boy's friends called 911 and emergency crews responded. Crews searched for 45 minutes until one of the rescuers saw the little boy sticking his finger through a manhole covering. The manhole lid was removed and the boy was pulled to safety. The boy was transported to a local hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance and was conscious and alert at the time.Sheriff’s officials are warning parents to not allow children to play in or near drainage ditches or retaining ponds especially during storms. The rapid water movement during these times can be life-threatening. 985
