ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds of people attended a carnival hosted by a celebrity chef on Monday to raise money for an Escondido restaurant owner nearly killed in a hit-and-run last December. Kaitlyn "Rosie" Pilsbury was riding her motorcycle when she was hit head-on by the driver of an SUV. The driver ditched the vehicle and took off. It happened in Vista just days before Christmas. Pilsbury suffered massive injuries and was in a coma for 12 days. "When I heard this happened my first call was to the network, my second call was to the mayor, and my third was to all these people, this is a 'Restaurant: Impossible' family in a community that cares about that young girl," said celebrity chef Robert Irvine of the Food Network. RELATED: Escondido restaurant owner remains in ICU after being hit by an SUVIrvine first met Pilsbury when her restaurant, Rosie's Cafe, was featured on his show "Restaurant: Impossible.""She's got the heart of gold, she helps this community inside, out she became very close to me a year ago," said Irvine, who visited Pilsbury in a rehab center Sunday. "She looks way better than she did four days ago. And today, she looks way better than she did yesterday." Pilsbury's mom flew in from New Jersey the moment she heard about the accident. Marie Pilsbury said the support is overwhelming. "She is, I believe, a miracle, in my opinion. I'm sorry, all the prayer and all the love I know that she felt it and I know that it made a difference," Pilsbury said tearfully. Her daughter is scheduled to be released from a rehab center on Tuesday. "She is so positive and so thrilled and so thankful for everything," said Pilsbury. Irvine told 10News' Rachel Bianco that the event helped raise nearly 0,000 that will go towards Kaitlyn Pilsbury's medical bills. 1807

Europe is thinking about giving advanced robots rights and responsibilities. Many experts say that's a terrible idea. The European Parliament passed a resolution last year that envisions a special legal status of "electronic persons" for the most sophisticated autonomous robots. The proposal is being considered by the European Commission, Europe's top regulator.More than 150 experts in robotics, artificial intelligence, law, medical science and ethics weighed into the debate on Thursday, with a clear warning against such a move.In an open letter to the European Commission, they said that the proposals appear to be influenced more by science fiction than the real world. 684

ENCINITAS (CNS) - A North County community leader who's known as a bicycle and pedestrian safety advocate was hit by a truck and seriously injured while riding her bicycle in Encinitas early Saturday. The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday on North Coast Highway 101 near Phoebe Street, San Diego Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins said. The victim was Roberta Walker, executive director of the Cardiff 101 Main Street Association, The Coast News reported. Walker is known as a staunch defender of pedestrian and cyclist rights. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Perkins said. Walker suffered injuries to her brain and spine, as well as broken bones, according to The Coast News.Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be factors in the crash, Perkins said.Cardiff 101 Main Street is an organization that promotes "a safe and healthy environment" and "a walkable community that provides goods and services for local residents and visitors alike" in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, according to the organization's website.A biographical page on the website describes Walker as a passionate cyclist. She's known as a supporter of the proposed Leucadia Streetscape project, which would add roundabouts, bike lanes and sidewalks to a stretch of North Coast Highway 101, including the area where she was struck. 1319

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - In recent days, swarms of butterflies have been spotted across North County, from Escondido to Vista to Fallbrook. They're Painted Lady butterflies, migrating north from Mexico. Tom Merriman, Director at Butterfly Farms in Encinitas, says conditions have been perfect for the species. The wet winter fueled vegetation growth in the Sonoran Desert in Mexico, giving caterpillars a lot to eat. “You’re going to see butterfly after butterfly after butterfly. Every two, three seconds you're going to see another butterfly coming through.”However, it's hard to predict when and where they'll be throughout the next few weeks. “The conditions were just perfect, I mean there could be over a billion of them, we don’t know. I'm hearing people from Palm Springs to Vista," said Merriman. He says he hasn’t seen a migration this vast in years. They're traveling at about 20 to 25 mph headed north to Oregon where they’ll breed, lay eggs and then die; the next generation will continue on north. The Painted Lady is smaller than the Monarch, and the two are relatives. If you'd like to donate to Butterfly Farms in Encinitas, funds are needed to help maintain the organization’s services to the community and to science. 1245

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -- Hundreds of North County school children were surprised Thursday with a new book for National Reading Day, along with a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog. 10News employees, with help from the Scripps Howard Foundation, donated 3,000 books to elementary schools in Fallbrook and Escondido. It was the most books ever donated by the station in the annual “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign, and nearly twice as many as last year, said Community Outreach & PR Manager Patty Thompson.Kindergartners and first graders at Live Oak Elementary in Fallbrook and Farr Avenue Elementary in Escondido lined up to greet Clifford and pick out a book of their own. Other books will be donated to libraries in the districts, Thompson said.At Live Oak Elementary, one girl picked out a new book about Barbie. “I like to read because sometimes, when it’s a fairy tale, it can take you to magical places,” she said.“A lot of these kids can’t afford books,” said Live Oak Elementary librarian Stacey Regotti.Farr Avenue principal Lizeth Lopez said encouraging students to read early is critical.“Data shows that if we can’t get our kids to read by third grade, their future may be limited,” she said. “So starting at 4, 5, and 6 years old is when we can catch them.”10News is owned by the E.W. Scripps Company. Scripps-owned stations across the country took part in Thursday’s event, distributing more than 172,000 books to children in need. The company’s corporate foundation, the Scripps Howard Foundation, matched donations by Scripps employees. The San Diego County Office of Education and Scholastic Book Fairs of San Diego also contributed to the book giveaways in the North County. 1705
