But the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla is moving forward with their 20-21 performance season. From Grammy nominated singers to comedians they have found a way to kickoff their year"Our Arts and Ideas season brings performers and intellectuals from a diversity of backgrounds, talents, and passions to share the arts with everyone, " says JCC board member Laurie Greenberg. "Which is incredibly important at this time." And for the first time, the JCC's cultural season will be all virtual."I think it's incredibly important because the arts broaden horizons, they give us new experiences. They give a little bit of an escape which we all need right now. It's really important that we can offer this arts and ideas season, as well as our other arts, and cultural programming to the community right now."And one of the great things about the new season, is it's being offered for free."What we're hoping to do is have this season entirely under written so that we're able to offer the entire season without charge. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of San Diego conservationists is testing a high-tech approach to catch poachers illegally fishing in marine protected areas.The Imperial Beach-based non-profit Wildcoast is in the midst of a pilot study with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to examine the effectiveness of land-based radar as a real-time monitoring tool for law enforcement.A single radar station can send a signal up to three miles and detect vessels as small as a kayak, said Wildcoast conservationist Cory Pukini."Enforcement officers will be able to open up a laptop or look at their cell phone to see if people are in compliance without actually deploying resources to come out here," Pukini said while boating through one of the marine protected areas (MPAs).There are 11 MPAs in San Diego County which have restrictions on fishing, including one near Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach and another near the La Jolla Children's Pool. The areas are designed to help fish populations rebound, provide a buffer zone for the effects of climate change, and preserve other resources.A new law that took effect this year allows wardens to issue heftier fines to people caught fishing for profit in an MPA. The penalty for a first offense now ranges from ,000 to ,000, up from 0 to ,000. Although wardens have issued more fines and warnings in recent years, enforcement remains elusive. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has just one boat and five wardens to patrol 18 MPAs in San Diego and Orange Counties. That's where the land-based radar and app could make an impact, according to Pukini."It'll help them more efficiently deploy resources to the field," he said.Together with ocean temperatures and weather data, information gathered by the radar could be used to forecast the times and locations where poaching is most likely, Pukini said. The Marine Monitor Radar Project study is in its second year. If it's shown to be effective, the approach could help protect marine preserves around the world, Pukini said. 2050

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Inside Super Food and Brew, it’s been a brutal few months of business, ever since the coronavirus pandemic began.“We did have to reduce the staff quite a bit,” said Al Penttila, Super Food and Brew’s general manager. “Basically, it was a struggle for them for the beginning of it.”Surviving mainly on take-out and delivery orders, news that the Republican National Convention would be coming to Jacksonville came as a welcome relief.“The arena is about three blocks from here so we're hoping and we're expecting a lot of foot traffic,” Penttila said.The RNC estimates about 50,000 people will make their way to Jacksonville for the convention and potentially bring in more than 0 million to the local economy. Yet, there are some concerns about what else it might bring, one of which revolves around the potential for protests during the convention.“I hope it doesn't get out of hand,” Penttila said. “I know they're taking precautions.”The city’s Republican mayor said there will be plenty of security in place.“Peaceful protests are a right and here in Jacksonville we honor and respect that right,” said Mayor Lenny Curry, R-Jacksonville. “There will be additional resources in our city that will be subsidized by the federal government.”Then, there’s the ever-lurking specter of COVID-19.
