SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid the national conversation on systemic racism, there is growing momentum for a campaign to change the name of a local high school and its mascot.Recently, sisters Emma and Charlotte Taila described the time to act as "a now-or-never moment."Emily is a recent graduate of Serra High School. Charlotte is an incoming junior. They started a Change.org petition drive, reviving an effort to change the school's mascot, a conquistador."[The mascot] represents Spanish colonialism and the brutal impact that it had on Native Americans," said Emma. The numbers of signatures climbed quickly, and then, they got some surprise backing from school leadership."She liked the mascot change and wanted to go a step further and go for a rebranding," said Charlotte."She" is Serra High principal Erica Renfree. In an email to the school community, she proposed not just a mascot change, but a name change to Tierrasanta High School.Serra High School is named after Father Junipero Serra, a canonized saint who founded Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769."With the establishment of missions, he participated in a lot of cultural erasure and violence again Native Americans," said Emma.In the past week, protesters have toppled statues of Father Serra in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In a statement, the California Catholic Conference of Bishops said "... the historical truth is that Serra repeatedly pressed the Spanish authorities for better treatment of Native American communities ..."For some students, the other parts of his legacy demand a change."There are better options of leaders to honor with the name of our school that better represent our history and who we are as a school," said Emma.10News reached to Mission San Diego de Alcala to see if they plan on removing their statues to protect them, and are waiting to hear back.Virtual town halls are scheduled to discuss the proposed changes with staff, parents, and students. A San Diego Unified School District naming committee will review the submitted proposal. The full school board will have the final say on any changes. 2105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego veteran and father is defending his son's right to sit during the national anthem.Ray Everett is responding to a letter sent to Lincoln High School's principal, complaining that students on the basketball team were sitting and talking during the national anthem. The man who wrote the letter is a U.S. Air Force veteran and grandfather to a player on the opposing team. Another parent who was offended used her phone to film the students sitting."At the end of the day our students do not have to stand," said Everett. "But you will not make them feel like they did something wrong. They did not harm anyone and they did not break the law."Everett was in the U.S. Army for 15 years. He says he served his country in order to protect the rights of Americans, including the right to sit during the national anthem.Everett's brother-in-law, Antoine Jarvis, says while he was offended by the letter he respects everyone's right to their own opinion. "I think that the biggest challenge in voicing your opinion is when you're close-minded to other's opinions," said Jarvis. "When you're close-minded to their beliefs."Jarvis says he no longer stands during the national anthem after learning more about its history. He only asks that others respect his right to do so.The principal of Lincoln High School, a veteran himself, has been responsive to complaints and plans to sit down with the veteran who wrote the letter about the student's actions. On Thursday the San Diego Unified School District sent a statement to 10News:Public school districts do not have the authority to require students to observe patriotic or religious rituals in the classroom or at school functions. We believe in our students right to free-speech, but also encourage students to be respectful in the way they choose to exercise their rights.School Administration is reaching out to the students involved and taking the opportunity to use this as a teachable moment. 1986

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Among a hanger filled with MCAS Miramar troops, President Donald Trump made a slew of promises: New gear, a massive pay raise, and a new outlook on space "war-fighting.""I have a message for you straight from the heart of the American people, and you know what that is. We support you. We thank you. We love you. And we will always have your back like you have ours," Trump told a hanger packed with service members.Trump continued, promising to uphold his administration's policy of "peace through strength" and the "largest military buildup since Ronald Regan."To the delight of those in attendance, the president promised to also institute the largest pay raise in a decade."We're also investing in our most powerful weapon of all ... you. In 2019, we want to give you your largest pay raise in over a decade," Trump promised.Trump added that MCAS Miramar is in line to receive new aircraft and "weaponry like we've never had before or sent before."In line with promises of new gear, Trump said the U.S. would "lead again" on the final frontier and introduced his administration's strategy for space exploration "recognizes space is a war-fighting domain.""We may even have a 'space force,'" Trump said. "We're doing a tremendous amount of work in space. I said maybe we'll need a new force. We'll call it 'the space force.'"Our service members will be vital to ensuring America continues to lead the way into the stars," Trump continued. "We're way, way behind."Trump went on to tout his long-promised border wall, hours after he toured prototypes in Otay Mesa.Tuesday, officials brought the president to the border to inspect the prototypes showing possible designs for a wall across the U.S.-Mexico border."You're not going to see them climbing over this wall too easily," Trump said. The president's speech went on to touch on human trafficking, calling it "the worst that it's ever been," and "sanctuary city" policies."They shield criminals," Trump said of the policies. "We are asking Congress to ensure that no federal funds subsidize this dangerous and unlawful behavior."California was designated a "sanctuary state" by Gov. Jerry Brown. The state has routinely said it will not allow local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration investigations and raids. As the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" rolled over the speakers, Trump thanked troops and made his way back to Air Force One for a Los Angeles fundraiser. 2519

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Across the state of California, there were more than 10,000 sexual harassment offenses, as defined by California education code that resulted in suspension, expulsion or disciplinary diversion.A San Diego mother says her daughter was bullied and sexually harassed at school.“She said that he would take her pencils from her,” said Myiesha Jackson. “If she tried to get them back he would stick them down his pants."Jackson claims the male student didn’t stop there. She claims he took Play-Doh, made it into the shape of a penis and rubbed it on her daughter while making inappropriate sounds."I consider that sexual harassment,” said Jackson. An investigation report Jackson gave to Team 10 says the accused student admitted to rolling up the Play-Doh and holding it up while singing an inappropriate song that was sexual in nature, and the Play-Doh represented a male genitalia part, but the other student denied touching her with it.At the end of the report, it lists an action play, basically separating both students at all points of the day so they wouldn’t come into contact with each other.Jackson says that’s not what happened."The very day I brought her back she was in lunch, the line to get lunch, and they let him out of the office apparently, and he went and stood directly behind her,” she said.Magnolia Science Academy- San Diego denied 10News’ request for an interview. In an emailed statement an attorney for Magnolia Public Schools wrote:“State and federal student confidentiality laws and our organization's policy prohibit MSA-SD from commenting on specific students or incidents in which they may be involved. MSA-SD is committed to the social, emotional and academic well-being of all its students. Any incidents that impact the well-being of a student are reviewed, investigated and responded to with the utmost urgency and thoroughness and addressed according to our internal policies protocols and legal requirements.” 1985
