An open letter to @JoeBiden was published today as a full-color ad in the @WashingtonPost from Tamika Palmer - mother of Breonna Taylor. Here she not only calls on Biden to prosecute the officers who murdered Breonna, but to bring about the change & justice he promised her. pic.twitter.com/Ga71UkSvUI— Shaun King (@shaunking) December 15, 2020 362

An aspiring dancer from Alabama thought she would be ticketed — or worse — by a Birmingham police officer after he approached her about dancing in the middle of a street.Lala Diore, who has been dancing since she was 3, according to WBRC-TV in Birmingham, was filming an audition video to send to singer Janet Jackson while Officer Philip Jones was driving by.According to Diore's Facebook post, Jones told Diore that she shouldn't be in the middle of the street, but quickly changed his tune."So you are risking getting hurt for this," Jones asked, according to Diore's Facebook post. "...okay I’ll stop traffic for you and cut my lights on, show me what you got."Jones then blocked traffic with his cruiser, and turned up his headlights to help Diore get the shot. "This has actually showed the world and the community that police officers are not just out here to harass people or that we’re being mean and uptight," Jones told WBRC. "It shows we are human and we can have a little fun." 1023

An Alabama family is mourning a man killed by police Thanksgiving night after being mistaken for the shooter who injured two people at a mall.An officer fatally shot Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. about 10 p.m. CT Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a Birmingham suburb. At the time, authorities said he got into an altercation at the mall and opened fire, injuring two people ages 18 and 12.An officer encountered an armed Bradford fleeing the scene and fatally shot him, police said. But after conducting forensic tests and talking to witnesses, investigators said Bradford might have been involved in the altercation but likely did not fire the rounds that injured the two youths. The gunman is still at large and police have not provided a name or description.Relatives are demanding answers as they mourn a man they call EJ."EJ was a devoted son and brother, who dedicated his life to serving his country and always doing the right thing," his family said in a statement."As we continue to grieve, rest assured that we are working diligently with our legal team to determine exactly what happened and why this police officer killed our son. We will never forget EJ, and ask for your continued prayers during this incredibly difficult time.""They killed him for no reason at all. He wasn't the shooter," his aunt, Catherine Jewell, told reporters. "He was a great guy. He was very respectable ... They did him wrong."Bradford's Facebook page says he was a US Army engineer. But he did not complete advanced individual training and did not serve, said Lt. Col. Manny Ortiz, an Army spokesman. The Bradford family has retained civil rights attorney Benjamin L. Crump, according to a statement from the law firm.Crump previously represented the family of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American fatally shot in Florida in 2012. 1852

As businesses continue to gradually reopen, visiting some may come with more risk of coronavirus exposure than others.Dr. Daliah Wachs broke down the COVID-19 exposure risk of various establishments.Medium risk for COVID-19 exposure are places like hair and nail salons, according to Dr. Wachs.“You’re right there up in their face, waxing their eyebrows, you can’t do that 6 feet social distancing,” said Dr. Wachs.According to new COVID-19 guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people should wait in their car until their hair or nail appointment, and to pay by phone.Medium risk of exposure locations also includes sit-down restaurants, grocery stores and the doctor’s office, according to Dr. Wachs.Dr. Wachs says a doctor’s office can pose a danger due to a higher concentration of sick people being in one place.Inching closer to the highest risk locations are spots like bars, casinos and gyms.“You’re exhaling a lot, so gyms need that extra social distancing, much more than six feet,” said Dr. Daliah. The CDC advises those in gyms to wipe down equipment with disinfecting wipes, and to wear a mask if the workout is low intensity. When it comes to high risk of exposure, Dr. Wachs says parents should be mindful of day care facilities.Another high-risk spot is the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to Dr. Wachs.“You start to come up on the person ahead of you, you almost mentally try to move yourself closer. To keep that 6 feet distance and to see that desk far away, I think the DMV because of how busy they are, and how we don’t have enough of them,” said Dr. WachsThis story was originally published by Austin Carter at KTNV. 1678
