SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents arrested a teenager Tuesday on suspicion of smuggling heroin along Interstate 5 in San Clemente. The 19-year-old man was weaving in and out of lanes near Camino de Estrella about 3 a.m., agents said. He drove his 1997 Chevy pickup truck to a nearby gas station and agents followed to conduct a safety check. “During the encounter, the agents grew suspicious of the driver’s behavior and they decided to request for a K-9 team to respond. The K-9 alerted to the truck’s engine compartment,” agent Theron S. Francisco said in a news release. Agents said they found four packages of heroin inside the truck’s air intake box. The drugs weighed almost five pounds and had a street value of about 7,000. The driver, a U.S. citizen, faces felony drug smuggling charges. 824

SAN DIEGO – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted almost 450 pounds of narcotics and captured 17 fugitives with outstanding felony warrants over the weekend. The drugs were valued at over .9 million. The officers were working at the ports of entry along the California border with Mexico from Friday, September 15 through Sunday, September 17 when they intercepted the drugs and captured the fugitives. Drugs confiscated:  470

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A military judge on Monday took the rare step of removing a prosecutor accused of misconduct from the war crimes case of a decorated Navy SEAL.Capt. Aaron Rugh ordered Cmdr. Christopher Czaplak removed from the case of Operations Chief Edward Gallagher after defense lawyers accused the prosecution of spying on their emails, according to the ruling.The defense asked Rugh to dismiss the case or remove prosecutors because of a surreptitious effort to track defense emails without court approval in an effort to find the source of news leaks.Rugh said it was not in his power to determine prosecutorial misconduct, but there was the possibility of a conflict of interest that required Czaplak to be removed, the ruling said.Rugh has not yet ruled on whether to dismiss murder and attempted murder counts against Gallagher.Last week, Rugh unexpectedly released Gallagher from custody as a remedy for interference by prosecutors.The removal could delay the trial scheduled to start June 10.Republicans in Congress have rallied in support of Gallagher, saying he has been mistreated. SAN DIEGO — The race between two Democrats vying to become San Diego's next mayor is neck and neck, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows State Assemblyman Todd Gloria leading City Councilwoman Barbara Bry 39 percent to 38 percent, with 24 percent undecided. The results are well within the SurveyUSA poll's 5.3 percent margin of error. The race is even closer now than it was a month ago, when a similar poll showed Bry leading Gloria 37 percent to 34 percent, also within the margin of error. While both are Democrats, the poll showed Bry getting a majority of her support from Republicans and Independents, while Todd Gloria retained a lead among Democrats. "Barbara Bry is talking about neighborhood issues and slowing down the growth of San Diego, whereas Todd Gloria is talking about addressing housing and doing some growth," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego. "That finds a political divide over growth that often separates moderates from liberals, or Democrats from Republicans even though both of these candidates Barbara Bry and Todd Gloria are both strong Democrats."Gloria took home 41 percent of the vote in the March primary, with Bry coming in second with 23 percent. She beat out Republican Scott Sherman by 1,189 to get into the top-two runoff, and his voters appear to be supporting her. SurveyUSA's poll shows 46 percent of Republicans voting in the mayor's race are supporting Bry, while 46 percent of independents voting in the race also plan to support Bry. Meanwhile, 24 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of independents voting in the race are supporting Gloria. Gloria's support is coming mostly from Democrats, with 53 percent of members of his own party planning to vote for him, compared to 27 percent for Bry. The remainder are undecided."There are different shades of blue within this city and this mayoral race is all about deciding what kind of Democrat San Diego will be governed by," Kousser said. In a statement, a spokesman for Gloria said they were focused on November 3. “The only poll that matters is Election Day," he said.
