WARSAW, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin met Grzegorz Schetyna, speaker of the Polish House of Representatives, here Thursday and vowed to bolster ties with the central European nation. NANJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged China to keep moving down the path of sustainable development and put greater emphasis on social equity and environmental sustainability.Addressing students of Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province, Ban said as the world's most populous country with the fastest growing economy, China has become the world's largest manufacturer and exporter but also the greatest emitter of greenhouse gases."Seven of the world's 10 most-polluted cities are in China. Your environmental footprint is growing daily," Ban said, adding that fortunately China is beginning to fight the side-effects of prosperity -- climate change and environmental degradation -- besides poverty.The UN chief noted that many of these development problems were raised during discussions as Chinese leaders recently met to draw the 12th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development of the country from 2010 to 2015.Ban applauded the Chinese government's goal of leading the country into an all-around Xiaokang society, or well-off society, by 2020 and said making Xiaokang a reality will, perhaps, ultimately become China's "great export -- its gift to humankind.""You already have a concept for it... ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday made a five-point proposal on boosting ties with Greece during talks with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, stressing that China is willing to work with the European country to combat the lingering financial crisis.Wen arrived in Athens earlier in the day, starting a three-day official visit to the country, the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.Papandreou held a grand welcoming ceremony for Wen after the Chinese premier's arrival.Wen said both countries were great civilizations in the history and the people of the two countries have always been amicable to each other. FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated as Megi, the 13th typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall in Zhangzhou City in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.As of 2 p.m., 272,300 people have been evacuated, according to officials at the provincial department of civil affairs.Also, there was no immediate report of casualties in Fujian. But disasters caused by typhoon Megi have claimed 11 lives in Taiwan, across the Taiwan Strait.The typhoon has weakened into a strong tropical storm after landing at Liu'ao Town of Zhangpu County, southern Fujian, packing winds of up to 140 km/h.The storm is expected to move northward at 10 km per hour and further weaken to become a tropical depression, according to the National Meteorological Center.The cloud cluster brought by the storm, however, will be hovering over the southern coast of Fujian for some time and is expected to dump more rain in the areas, according to the Fujian provincial meteorological bureau.Zhangpu received 243 mm of rainfall, and neighboring Yunxiao County recorded 332 mm between 8 a.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday.The precipitation in cities of Zhangzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou will reach 100 mm in the next 12 hours, the provincial meteorological bureau said.The storm will also be responsible for heavy rains in Fujian's neighboring provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang.Influenced by the typhoon, 79 flights at the airport of Xiamen City, also in Fujian, had been canceled as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the Dadeng Bridge, which connects Xiamen City and Dadeng Island, has been closed since 7 a.m.The Ministry of Civil Affairs said late Saturday that it has launched an emergency response by sending working groups to coordinate disaster relief efforts.Also, Sun Chunlan, Communist Party chief in Fujian, has ordered local officials to be on high alert against possible heavy rains and geological disasters.

MANILA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government will provide the Chinese government a copy of the final report on the Aug. 23 hostage-taking incident before it divulges the findings to the public, the presidential palace said on Friday night.Secretary Ricky Carandang of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office made the statement after President Aquino met with the Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC) led by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, following the submission of the final report on the incident that killed eight Hong Kong nationals."We have to communicate this to Beijing first before we make it public," Carandang said, adding that the presidential palace only "wants to be careful" in handling the sensitive matter.He said that the high-level Philippine delegation will still go to Beijing and Hong Kong to formally present the report to their leaders but this will have to be done after the President's working visit to the United States.The President and his delegation to the United States will depart on Monday night and will return on Sept. 28.
