SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) -- Health officials have confirmed a case of plague at South Lake Tahoe -- the first in California in five years.El Dorado County officials said Monday the California Department of Public Health notified them of the positive test of a local resident who is under medical care while recovering at home.Plague bacteria are most often transmitted by fleas that have acquired it from infected squirrels, chipmunks and other wild rodents.Health officials believe the South Tahoe resident may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking a dog along the Truckee River corridor or in the Tahoe Keys area on Tahoe's south shore. 664

Sounds of gunfire prompted emergency calls and a lockdown at a North Carolina high school, but a public information officer says there is currently no evidence of an active shooter.Officials with the Pender County Sheriffs' Office are still searching Topsail High School as a precaution, and Pender Schools remain on lockdown.The high school went into lockdown at 6:30 a.m. ET due to reports of the sounds of gunfire. Pender Schools confirmed in a tweet that it was investigating an active shooter at Topsail High School at about 8 a.m. It added that all of the district's campuses on the "eastern side of Pender County" are on lockdown.Pender Schools later confirmed that the noises "from the top of the building" were mistaken for gunfire. Seven inmates were killed and 17 others were injured overnight at a South Carolina prison -- the fourth deadly incident at the facility in the past 10 months.No officers were injured in the latest fracas at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, said Jeffrey Taillon, spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.The incident started at 7:15 p.m. ET Sunday and involved "multiple inmate altercations in three housing units," Taillon said. Several United States government agencies issued an alert on Friday to financial institutions about a North Korea-backed hacking group known as the BeagleBoyz.In a joint statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) said the hackers steal money through fraudulent bank transfers and ATM cashouts throughout several countries, including the United States."Since February 2020, North Korea has resumed targeting banks in multiple countries to initiate fraudulent international money transfers and ATM cashouts," the agencies said in the release. "The recent resurgence follows a lull in bank targeting since late 2019. This advisory provides an overview of North Korea’s extensive, global cyber-enabled bank robbery scheme, a short profile of the group responsible for this activity, in-depth technical analysis, and detection and mitigation recommendations to counter this ongoing threat to the Financial Services sector."Active since 2014, the group stole million from the Bank of Bangladesh in 2016, and were responsible for the FastCash ATM attacks in 2018, the agencies said.The group has attempted to steal nearly billion since at least 2015, the alert said."Any BeagleBoyz robbery directed at one bank implicates many other financial services firms in both the theft and the flow of illicit funds back to North Korea," the alert stated.According to the warning, the hackers have also targeted financial institutions in Argentina, Chile, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain. 1629

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team last year made clear it wanted former Trump campaign deputy Rick Gates' help, not so much against his former business partner Paul Manafort, but with its central mission: investigating the Trump campaign's contact with the Russians. New information disclosed in court filings and to CNN this week begin to show how they're getting it.In a court filing earlier this week, the public saw the first signs of how the Mueller team plans to use information from Gates to tie Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, directly to a Russian intelligence agency. Mueller's team alleges that Gates was in contact with a close colleague of Manafort's who worked for a Russian intelligence agency -- and that Gates knew of the spy service ties in September and October 2016, while he worked on the Trump campaign. Gates would have to talk about the communication with the man if prosecutors wanted, according to his plea deal.That's in line with what prosecutors told Gates months ago during high-stakes negotiations, CNN has learned. They told him they didn't need his cooperation against Manafort, according to a person familiar with the investigation, and instead wanted to hear what he knew about contact between the Trump campaign and Russians.The extent of Gates' knowledge about any such contact or what he told prosecutors hasn't been made public.As part of Gates' agreement to cooperate with the special counsel a month ago, he earned a vastly reduced potential sentence and had several charges dropped in two criminal cases against him.Gates' plea also adds to mounting pressure on his co-defendant Manafort -- who so far the government is making a central player in the investigation -- to change his plea and potentially help investigators.
