SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department saved a baby hummingbird found injured near a fire station, the department tweeted Sunday. According to the tweet, the hummingbird was found at the base of a tree in the parking lot of station 9. The department says the bird was unable to fly due to its injuries. “After some firefighter TLC and lots of sugar water, it was able to fly back to its mother. A great save,” the department said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. Protecting the integrity of the gaming industry protects California and is our true North Star that guides all of our stances and decisions ..."To get on the November ballot, both houses would have to approve it by late June.  One Assembly source tells 10news that's unlikely, with a more likely date being November 2020. 2806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player. The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said. The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. Although the state pays for some of the expenses, the team needs the community to step up.“We need this opportunity to really display that the Southeast produces athletes, great young men, and character,” said Kirkland.San Diego High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High also qualified for the state finals and need financial help. To donate, contact the schools or click on the linked text for Orange Glen or Lincoln High. 1593

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are growing concerns over illegal filming in private places, like short-term vacation rentals. A San Diego security expert shows us how surveillance cameras are getting smaller, cheaper and harder to spot.Joe Oregon is a San Diego cyber security expert who also teaches at San Diego State University. He knows how simple it is to plant and conceal hidden cameras and tells us, “You want to make sure that you're closely inspecting the room or the location you're going to.” “I cringe thinking about it just as a citizen and as a father, you know. I have children, as well,” he adds.People’s worries over spy cameras have been increasing in the U.S. and internationally. A couple on vacation in Florida found themselves on-camera. At their short-term rental, they discovered a smoke detector with a hard drive in it, recording them in bed.A couple staying at a rental in Toronto was reportedly shocked to find a spy camera hidden in an alarm clock, pointed at the bed.Engineer Brandon Schamer specializes in micro-cameras. “They hide them in the smoke detectors. Sometimes people will actually tuck them under hidden spots where you wouldn't look like behind the TV,” he says. Schamer reveals that a spy camera can be hiding in an air conditioning vent, a plant, a stuffed animal, or even a spice rack. There are numerous possibilities. He says when you check into a rental unit, use the flash light on your phone’s camera to look around to see any reflections from tiny lenses. He explains that you can also check for infrared frequencies. “It’s totally invisible to the naked eye,” he adds. Your cell phone camera can detect infrared. Schamer explains that you should put your phone’s camera in “selfie-mode” and scan the room for a purple light which could indicate there's a transmitting camera. These days most cameras can be bought online. “They're not illegal devices so anyone can purchase them,” adds Oregon.Vacation rental sites like Airbnb and VRBO have strict rules about surveillance. Cameras are allowed in living rooms but they must be disclosed on the rental forms. They're not allowed in private areas like bedrooms or bathrooms. Oregon doesn't think you should descend into paranoia, but, he adds, “It's important to have a healthy dose of concern.” 2298
