LOS ANGELES, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Freeze-dried strawberries may play a role in the prevention of esophageal cancer, a new study suggests."Strawberries may be an alternative or work together with other chemopreventive drugs for the prevention of esophageal cancer," said lead researcher Tong Chen, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor, division of medical oncology, department of internal medicine at the Ohio State University.Study findings were presented at the ongoing 102nd annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Orlando, Florida, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on Wednesday."We concluded from this study that six months of eating strawberries is safe and easy to consume. In addition, our preliminary data suggests that strawberries can decrease histological grade of precancerous lesions and reduce cancer- related molecular events," said Chen, who is also a member of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program in the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.The study involved a group of participants who consumed 60 grams of freeze-dried strawberries daily for six months and completed a dietary diary chronicling their strawberry consumption.The researchers obtained biopsy specimens before and after strawberry consumption. The results showed that 29 out of 36 participants experienced a decrease in histological grade of the precancerous lesions during the study.Using freeze-dried strawberries was important because by removing the water from the berries, they concentrated the preventive substances by nearly 10-fold, Chen said.Esophageal cancer is the third most common gastrointestinal cancer and the sixth most frequent cause of cancer death in the world, she noted.Chen and her team are studying esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) which makes up 95 percent of cases of esophageal cancer worldwide. China, where this study took place, has the highest incidence of esophageal SCC, according to the AAAS.In a previous study, Chen and colleagues found that freeze- dried strawberries significantly inhibited tumor development in the esophagus of rats. Based on these results, they embarked on a Phase Ib trial that included participants with esophageal precancerous lesions who were at high risk for esophageal cancer."Our study is important because it shows that strawberries may slow the progression of precancerous lesion in the esophagus," Chen said.But she said they need to test this in randomized placebo- controlled trials in the future.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The world's leading hard rive producer Western Digital Corp. on Monday announced that it has agreed to buy Hitachi Ltd.'s hard disk drive unit for about 4. 3 billion U.S. dollars, a move that will create a dominant player in the industry.Western Digital said that it plans to acquire Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., in cash and stock.The proposed combination will result in a customer-focused storage company with the industry's broadest product lineup backed by a rich technology portfolio, Western Digital said.According to their agreement, the resulting company will retain the Western Digital name and remain headquartered in Irvine in the U.S. state of California.The transaction has been approved by the board of directors of each company and is expected to close during the third quarter of 2011.With the purchase, Western Digital will claim 49.6 percent share of global hard disk drive unit shipments based on latest quarterly statistics, compared to 29.4 percent for Seagate Technology LLC, the industry's No. 2 supplier, research firm iSuppli pointed out.The deal will give Western Digital a lead of 20.2 percentage points over Seagate, up from a mere 2 points without the acquisition, iSuppli said in a research note released Monday.The acquisition will also allow Western Digital to enter the critical enterprise hard disk drive segment, where it currently is only a marginal player.Analysts believed that the purchase might be a consequence of declining hard disk drive shipments, which are being impacted by the rising sales of tablet computers, which don't use hard disk drives and are cutting into the sales of mobile PCs, a major market for hard drives."Amid weaker industry conditions, organic sales growth is more difficult to achieve, prompting hard disk drive suppliers to engage in acquisitions to gain market share," iSuppli noted.

LOS ANGELES, April 4 (Xinhua) -- A woman's breast milk cells may be used to predict cancer in future research, according to a study published by HealthDay News on Monday.In the study, researchers at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst collected breast milk from 271 women in the United States. All had either undergone a biopsy of the breast to check for cancer, or were scheduled for one.The researchers evaluated breast milk samples from the biopsied and non-biopsied breasts.The researchers first isolated potentially cancerous cells, known as epithelial cells, and then isolated DNA to look for signals that regulate tumor suppresser genes.In the next step, the researchers analyzed three genes among the many known to undergo a process called methylation in breast cancer. Methylation in a specific region of a gene can inhibit or suppress the expression of a gene.For one gene, SFRP1, the average methylation was higher in the biopsied breast, the study found.Among the women whose biopsies detected cancer, average methylation of the RASSF1 gene in the biopsied breast was considerably higher compared to the non-biopsied breast.Among the women whose biopsies detected cancer, average methylation of the RASSF1 gene in the biopsied breast was considerably higher compared to the non-biopsied breast."It looks as if we can use the cells from breast milk to assess breast cancer risk," said Dr. Kathleen Arcaro, an associate professor of veterinary and animal sciences at the university.It's too soon, however, to assess the cancer detection rate associated with breast milk cell examination, she said."We can't say at this point for two reasons," she said. "One is, we need long-term follow-up. BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- An initial ruling by China's Ministry of Commerce said Monday that European Union (EU) members have subsidized potato starch exports to China, hurting the interests of China's domestic industries.China will impose an anti-subsidy provision of the tariff on potato starch products effective from May 19, the ministry said in a statement on its website. The rate will range between 7.7 percent and 11.19 percent, depending on the subsidy margin, according to the statement.The initial ruling accused several EU companies, including France's Roquette Freres and Netherland's AVEBE, of receiving subsidies.China launched an anti-subsidy investigation into potato starch imports from the EU on August 30, 2010 at the request of the China Starch Industry Association. This was China's first-ever anti-subsidy probe into imports from the EU.China had earlier decided to impose anti-dumping tariffs ranging from 12.6 percent to 56.7 percent on EU potato starch products. The new tariffs were effective from April 19.

BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's civil affairs ministers visited survivors of last year's 7.1-magnitude Yushu earthquake and Zhouqu mudslide prior to China's lunar new year.Dou Yupei, vice minister of Civil Affairs, led a team to Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province to visit quake survivors and local cadres beginning on Sunday.Dou told Xinhua that quake survivors in Yushu now had access to food, clothing, safe drinking water, shelters and medical services, and the reconstruction of quake-damaged houses was well underway.Further, the ministry has distributed 45,000 cotton-padded tents to Yushu to house survivors during the extremely cold winter on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.So far, 160,000 tents have been set up to assure that all survivors have a roof overhead, according to the ministry's statement issued Wednesday.Yushu was jolted by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on April 14, leaving 2,200 people dead and 220,000 local residents affected.Another vice minister, Sun Shaocheng, visited survivors from a massive mudslide that left 1,700 people dead or missing in Zhouqu, Gansu province.To provide warm shelters to survivors, the Zhouqu county government invested three million yuan (455,000 U.S. Dollars) in renovating vacant school buildings or installing facilities in newly-built apartments.All survivors who previously had taken shelter in make-shift tents were relocated to these buildings before Oct. 13, according to the ministry's statement.
