CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Carlsbad neighbors banded together to finish the hike of a woman who was stabbed to death in Hosp Grove Park.Dozens of hikers descended upon the trail Saturday afternoon, honoring 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg.Thorborg was walking or jogging, according to police, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday when she was attacked.RELATED: Carlsbad police: Woman found dead on hiking trail was stabbed to death"We loved her, though many of us didn't know her. I didn't know her personally, but you could definitely tell she had a sweet spirit," Neighbor Theresa Dooley said.Dooley said she was shocked and deeply hurt by the news. She said neighbors had been discussing what happened on the Nextdoor app and organized a walk for Thorborg."Some would like to finish the walk she began, some of us might walk various areas of the park here," Dooley said.Dooley said they wanted to wash away the fear surrounding the park, "we don't want our parks taken away from us, we don't want to live in fear, we want to be able to enjoy this, we want families to be able to come out here."Dooley added she will be taking precautions now when she hikes, "as women, it's probably important to have a partner with us, someone that we're hiking with."A tipster led investigators to identify a suspect as white or Hispanic, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a husky build and a tan complexion with dark hair. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — One man has been arrested and another person is dead following a North County apartment complex shooting earlier this month.A verbal dispute in the 5100 block of Whitman Way on Aug. 4 erupted into a triple shooting just before 6 a.m., according to Carlsbad Police. The suspected gunman, Jonathan Wilburn, of Carlsbad, reportedly retrieved a firearm at a family gathering and shot two people, in addition to accidentally shooting himself.One victim received non-life threatening injuries while the other was in critical condition. Can you imagine a pile of trash twice the size of Texas? That's what's floating in the Pacific Ocean right now.A group started an ambitious project to clean it up.Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, has waited five years to see his idea put into action. That idea consists of a 2,000-foot long barrier, with a 10-foot skirt below that’ll help get plastic out of the ocean.“2,000 feet is a pretty big clean up system, and just imagining that the future one will probably be you know maybe twice as large,” says Slat.It's work starts at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch--an area between California and Hawaii--with a pile of trash three times the size of France.  “You go out there, it's all blue. The thing is you're all miles away from any human activity and you start to see like objects that you can see in your kitchen,” says Laurent Lebreton, lead oceanographer. “So, it's just very striking like you wouldn't expect.”The system will corral the plastic floating on the surface, so fish and other ocean life can swim underneath. Then, smaller boats take the plastic back to shore for recycling. The Ocean Cleanup says it can extract 50 percent of the plastic in the patch every five years.  “That's a huge goal,” says Dr. Mikki McColb-Kobza, with Ocean First Institute. “If they are able to do that, I think that is a really big dent into the problem.”Dr. McColb-Kobza says the system is meeting an unaddressed need.  “There really haven't been a lot of other projects trying to go out and bring trash bag to try and figure out a way to bring it back,” he says.  Still, some say the system creates a false sense of security, and more focus should be placed on keeping plastic out of the ocean to begin with.  But Dr. McColb-Kobza says the project is a great way to get that conversation started.  “Really the key is not only to clean up what is there, but it's to think about why you know do we live in this plastic throw a way society.”   1990

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — One man was killed early Thursday after his vehicle overturned and he was thrown from the vehicle in the North County.The crash occurred just before 5 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5, south of Basilone Rd., according to California Highway Patrol. CHP believes the 40-year-old driver of a Toyota 4-Runner was traveling southbound when for unknown reasons, he left the roadway. The vehicle overturned and the man was thrown from the SUV.CHP, Camp Pendleton Fire Department, and North County Transit District responded to the scene, but the man died at the scene. He was not immediately identified.Investigators said they don't believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, and are still looking into the crash. 755

CANTON, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia school district has quarantined more than 1,000 students and staff members because of possible exposure to the coronavirus since classes resumed this last week. The Cherokee County School District outside Atlanta said it would also temporarily shut down a hard-hit high school in which a widely shared photo showed dozens of maskless students posing together. "Since we’ve reopened, and as of this morning, there have been 59 positive COVID-19 tests confirmed among our students and staff, which have led us to mandate two-week quarantines for 925 students and staff," Superintendent Dr. Brian V. Hightower said in a Facebook post. "We are not hesitating to quarantine students and staff who have had possible exposure – even if the positive test was prompted by possible exposure rather than symptoms, as all positive cases can lead to the infection of others.
