FLORENCE, Italy, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China highly values its relations with Italy and is willing to broaden consensus and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the country in various fields. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Italy established diplomatic relations 39 years ago, Hu said at a meeting with senior Italian officials, including Culture Minister Sandro Bondi and Toscana Region's President Claudio Martini.     He added that the two countries have further deepened their cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields especially since they set up an all-around strategic partnership in 2004. BRUSSELS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials and scholars from the European Union (EU) and China held a conference here, urging the two sides to enhance cooperation dedicated to seeking a global solution to the financial crisis.     "After the financial crisis hit us, we stood closer, supported each other and worked together for an early recovery of our economy and that of the world. We become tightly bound more than ever before," Chinese ambassador to the EU Song Zhe said in a keynote speech at the conference in the European Parliament on Monday.     "We have every reason to cooperate," Song said, adding China and the EU have converging interest and share common responsibility.     Sino-EU relations has experienced slight derailing last year, as China postponed a summit with the EU due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to meet the ** Lama when France held the EU presidency. Relations appeared back on track in the face of the global financial crisis.     Early this year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Europe on a Journey of Confidence. Later during the G20 summit in London early this month, President Hu Jintao met a number of European leaders to consolidate mutual trust.     In an effort to build a joint front against the financial and economic crisis, a trade and investment delegation from China last month struck multi-billion-U.S.-dollar deals with European companies to boost trade.     Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan is scheduled to visit Brussels next week for high-level economic dialogues with EU counterparts.     The 11th China-EU Summit will be held in Prague in mid-May, as the Czech Republic is holding the current EU presidency.     The EU is the biggest organization of developed countries and China is the biggest developing country, Song said, adding bilateral relationship takes on greater global and strategic importance.     Antonie Quero-Mussot, deputy head of cabinet of EU Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, noted that cooperation between the EU, China and beyond is a necessary condition for a solution to the global financial crisis.     "Without the dialogue not only between the EU and China, but also between all the major economies... there will not be a solution to the crisis," he said.     His remark was echoed by Mei Zhaorong, former president of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.     "We can not solve the problem alone but have to work together," Mei said at the conference.     He also downplayed the possibility of a G2 framework, under which the United States and China are expected to have a joint central role of leading the world out of the crisis.     "We are not of the opinion that we alone with the U.S. can solve the problem," Mei said, "I do not think Europe like that opinion either."     "I think the current form of G20 are far better. We should look at developing countries and emerging economies," he added.

URUMQI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said Tuesday that ethnic unity was the "basic benefit" for all the people in Xinjiang.     "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua in an interview in Urumqi Tuesday.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, an ethnic Uygur, was born in 1942 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960 and was elected CPPCC National Committee vice chairman in 2008. MOSCOW, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The construction of the China-Russia oil pipeline conforms with the strategic goals of China and Russia to diversify the former's energy imports and latter's energy exports, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Liu Guchang has said.     The move reflects the two countries' confidence and determination to tide over together the current global economic downturn, Liu said in a recent written interview with Xinhua on Sunday.     The signing of a package of oil cooperation deals between China and Russia as well as the start of the oil pipeline project marked a major breakthrough in their energy cooperation, represented a new height of China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation and further substantiate this partnership, Liu said.     Trade of crude via the pipeline will help stabilize and enhance the growth in bilateral trade, the diplomat added.     Under the agreement reached between both countries, China and Russia will jointly build and operate the pipeline from Russia's Siberian city of Skovorodino to China's northeastern city of Daqing as its terminal via China's border city of Mohe.     The construction of the Russian part of the pipeline started on April 27, and the Chinese part will be launched in mid-May. The pipeline, with an annual capacity of 15 million tons of crude to China within 20 years, is expected to go into operation in October2010.     The two sides will study the feasibility of increasing its delivery capacity after the pipeline is put into production, Liu said. The project will ensure stable and secure oil supplies to China, open a stable and sound market for Russian oil, and boost the cooperation between enterprises of the two countries in oil exploration and refining, Liu said.     Such a cooperation mode may well serve as a good example for the two sides to further broaden and deepen their all-round, long-term and stable energy cooperation in natural gas, nuclear energy and electric power, Liu said

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- On China's first "Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day" on Tuesday, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu called for enhancing public awareness of disaster reduction.     Tuesday also marked the first anniversary of the massive Wenchuan earthquake that rocked southwestern Sichuan Province on May 12 last year and claimed more than 69,000 lives, leaving nearly 18,000 missing.     Hui, also director of the National Commission for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), told a forum on disaster prevention and reduction that "efforts should be made to strengthen the foundation of disaster reduction and step up disaster monitoring, relief and reconstruction so as to create sound conditions for social stability."     Approved by the State Council, or Cabinet, the NCDR, Ministry of Civil Affairs, China Earthquake Administration and Beijing Municipal Government jointly staged an emergency drill Tuesday in Beijing's Haidian District, participated in by students and some members of the public, in a simulated earthquake situation. They practiced evacuation, aid in the air and medical aid.     Hui said the country's disaster emergency and legal mechanism on disaster reduction is being constantly improved and the comprehensive reaction in disaster relief was getting better.     The emergency response system had played a key role in dealing with the 8-magnitude quake and snow disaster in southern China last year, as well as severe flooding, drought and typhoon, and greatly saved people's life and reduced economic loss, he said.     "However, the disaster reduction situation is still arduous as various natural disasters are frequent in China," Hui said.     He called for enhancing monitoring and early warning so as to quickly respond to disasters, consolidating various infrastructures and rural and urban constructions, bringing the army's disaster relief role to a full play and improving disaster relief capabilities to ensure stability of disaster-hit areas.     Efforts should be made to strengthen material and technological storage, public education and official training, he said.
