SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Independent System Operator again Sunday reminded consumers throughout the state conserve energy, warning of more possible rotating outages.SDG&E said early in the day Sunday that customers should be prepared for possible outages to be called from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.The news comes after a flex alert was issued statewide from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Monday, September 7.“Energy conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of people impacted. Understandably, it may be difficult to reduce energy use during the high temperatures and the ongoing pandemic. However, everyone is urged to do their part to cut back on energy use, if health and safety permits, during this critical time,” SDG&E wrote.Just before 6:30 p.m., CAISO issued a Stage 2 emergency and warned that consumers should conserve power until 9 p.m. to avoid rolling outages. Stage 2 is the step before rolling outages are ordered.The energy provider said turning off air conditioners, avoiding the use of the dishwasher, clothes washers and dryers, and switching off unused lighting can all help conserve energy.SDG&E also said the Valley Fire, which has currently burned 1,500 acres near Alpine, has impacted electrical equipment and caused power outages.SDG&E said it’s working with Cal Fire in an effort to restore power quickly. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The bomb squad was called to the 2300 block of Meadow Lark Drive around 6:20 p.m. after a man reported he found WWII-era Japanese grenades.The man, Mike Carter, is a former Marine and said his training kicked in when he found the three gnarled pieces of metal."I just figured it would be the right thing to do to dispose of them properly and not throw them in the trash," Carter said.He is a hobbyist, buying items like radio-controlled cars, helicopters and other toys, and then he sells them online. One remote control helicopter that he said he paid for is actually valued closer to ,500.This was his second time buying a storage locker and his interest was piqued by a Saturn IV Rocket. With it came a wooden box he put in the bed of his truck.As he worked his way through the items inside, he came across the bombs.Carter said he took a picture of them, then put them back where he found them and called the bomb squad.He said he was never nervous about them exploding, saying they've been around at least 75 years.His street was shut down for about an hour. He apologized for the trouble to his neighbors.When it comes to whether he'll ever buy a storage locker again, he said maybe. There would have to be something worthwhile inside, and he would check the contents before bringing anything home. 1362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Coronado Police Department released an image Monday of a vehicle that may be related to BB gun incidents in Coronado Sunday. 10news has learned five people were struck in the downtown area. Police spent the morning scouring the ground near State Street and West Broadway. An officer told 10news four people were crossing State Street late Saturday night or early Sunday evening when three of them were hit. The extent of their injuries are unknown. At the corner of L Street and Sixth Avenue in the East Village, a woman was shot in the arm early Sunday morning, according to San Diego Police. She was walking in a small group and one of the men was an exhibitor at Comic Con, staying at the Omni Hotel, where they were headed before the shooting. The early morning shooting was not the only one that occurred overnight. In National City and Paradise Hills, at least a dozen cars were hit, and in Coronado, police said at least 23 businesses, homes an cars were struck by BBs.10news brought the image of a white sedan released by Coronado Police to Roman Beck, who has worked as an accident reconstruction expert for two decades."I believe it's a 2005 to 2010 Chrysler 300 sedan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The majority of residents at Reo Vista Healthcare Center in Paradise Hills have COVID-19, according to officials with the facility.A total of 112 residents have tested positive, according to the facility’s administrator Curtis White. 40 staff members also tested positive for COVID-19. White confirmed 14 residents have passed away. Of that number, five died in local hospitals.The facility holds 135 residents.Juanita Gomez was one of the residents who tested positive. Her son told Team 10 she passed away July 1st.The state strike team assisted in expediting testing for residents and staff, White said. They have visited the facility three times.Cesar Noriega’s 90-year-old mother also tested positive. She is currently in the hospital dealing with COVID-19 and other health related issues. “She’s not doing well. She’s in a lot of pain,” Noriega said. Noriega said he urged early testing at the facility, but his pleas for help went ignored. He is now trying to figure out where his mother can get care after she is released from the hospital.“I’ve gone through elation, through depression, to anger… this is almost on a daily basis,” Noriega said.White said “most of the individuals with COVID are experiencing mild or no symptoms.” 13 residents and 23 staff members have recovered.“Our top priority remains the health and well-being of everyone in our facility,” White said. 1409

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Senate will vote this week on a bill to add a surcharge to utility bills, with the money going to pay for damages caused by wildfires.Governor Gavin Newsom says he wants the bill on his desk to sign by Friday before the legislature takes its summer break.According to the text of Assembly Bill 1054, each utility company would have to "collect a nonbypassable charge from its ratepayers to support the Wildfire Fund." That money would go to pay for damages from wildfires caused by utility companies.But the fund can only be used if the utility companies comply with state safety laws and regulations.The bill also requires each electric company to file a wildfire mitigation plan with the state every three years, and update it yearly.Critics say it's nothing more than a tax, passing the responsibility of wildfire damage away from the utility companies and onto rate-payers."This is going to be a tax that will go on, who knows how long," says Richard Rider from the San Diego Tax Fighters. "Long after the utilities have buried their wires, long after the risk has dropped dramatically, the ratepayers will still be paying it."Rider says this bill would unfairly make people in low-risk areas pay into a fund that would only benefit people in high-risk areas.RELATED: PG&E equipment may have caused Camp FireAn SDG&E spokesperson says the company does not have an official position on AB 1054 but sent a statement to 10News saying:"We believe this bill is a good starting point for legislation to be enacted by July 12 to help address some of the legal, regulatory and policy challenges facing California, as the state grapples with the wide-ranging impact of catastrophic wildfires.
