SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The University of California Board of Regents announced Wednesday that it will ease admissions requirements for students applying to its nine campuses, including UC San Diego, during the coronavirus pandemic.The board voted Tuesday to suspend using SAT scores and letter grade requirements for A-G courses completed within the 2020 school year for all students who apply."We want to help alleviate the tremendous disruption and anxiety that is already overwhelming prospective students due to COVID-19," said John Perez, chair of the UC Board of Regents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- Opening statements will likely begin Thursday morning in the retrial of Kellen Winslow II, who is charged with raping a woman in Encinitas and an unconscious teen in Scripps Ranch in 2003. Winslow was previously convicted of raping a homeless woman and exposing himself to two others. After a week of deliberations, the Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges. Those charges included rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request.The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of San Diego Star Wars cosplayers are committed to charity work, not galactic control.Dressed as the "bad guys" of the Star Wars universe, the Imperial Sands Garrison can be found visiting children in the hospitals or supporting fundraisers. The group tries to attend more than 150 events a year."There's nothing better than going up and getting a high-five from the kids," says local commading officer Todd Mullen.Though over 100 strong, the Imperial Sands Garrison is only part of a much larger network. The 501st Legion spans worldwide with over 13,000 members. It has united Star Wars fans since 1997. 640
