SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With COVID-19 cases spiking in parts of the country, some of the largest testing providers are struggling to keep up with the demand, complicating efforts to isolate infected individuals and trace their contacts.Quest Diagnostics announced Monday its turnaround time for most test results had expanded to four to six days, back to where it was in the beginning of April. Email our reporter.Team10’s Adam Racusin got his negative test results from the site in Lakeside back in three days.The county’s goal is to report all test results within three days, although the current average is between three and five days for non-priority tests, according to County Health and Human Services Agency Director Nick Macchione.The county typically reports priority tests within 24 to 48 hours for vulnerable populations like individuals at skilled nursing facilities and first responders, he said.I visited the testing site in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot and got my negative test results back in seven days, after I placed a call to the County Nurse Line inquiring about them.“It’s about resources,” said County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten.Wooten suggested that the recent spike in demand could be playing a role in increased wait times for results.The county uses its own lab to test samples, but when the lab gets backed up it sends samples to private labs that have been inundated with demand.In addition to Quest, Lab Corp and CVS Minute Clinic have reported long waits linked to high demand in recent days.In hard-hit Arizona, ABC News reported that some people are waiting up to 10 days for results."When we tell them, go home, self-isolate, quarantine yourself until we get back to you and that period of time is a week to 10 days, people start to kind of diverge from those suggestions within a few days,” said Dr. Tyler Smith, a professor and epidemiologist at National University.He said not only can testing delays lead to more infections if people waiting for results venture out in public, the added time makes contact tracing more difficult.There are already signs of strain on the county’s ability to do contact tracing: as of Monday, the county was able to launch just 57 percent of its case investigations within 24 hours, setting off one of its warning triggers.The county says it is taking steps to speed up testing in its lab, including adding staff and securing new testing equipment that has yet to arrive. The county has also added shifts at the lab, going with up to three shifts a day to process specimens.As the number of cases grows in San Diego County, there could be future delays in turnaround time at the county lab, “but likely not beyond where it is today,” said spokesman Tim McClain.“Everyone should be practicing social distancing, good handwashing and wearing of a face covering,” he said via email. “Individuals who felt symptomatic or otherwise had a strong belief they had the virus should isolate themselves and follow other public health precautions until the results come back.” 3362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with an invisible injury, and its effects can be debilitating."I was not happy with myself, I was unhealthy, I was seeking all sorts of excitement and danger, I was drinking a whole heck of a lot, very angered, always in pain, migraines, physically and emotionally drained, unhealthy in so many ways," said Jimmy Works, a retired Marine Corps veteran.While his last deployment was in 2010, Works was only diagnosed with TBI this year despite suffering multiple head injuries in combat."It's part of life, it's a new reality," said Works. Works and other TBI survivors are now finding healing through LoveYourBrain Yoga, an evidence-based program now in dozens of states. "What's unique about the LoveYourBrain series is it's specifically for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers," said Nancine Decherd, a facilitator for the program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Tracking citizen complaints about law enforcement is a requirement of California law. However, some say there needs to be a significant improvement in that process."Police officers have tremendous authority," said former police officer and criminal justice professor Kevin LaChapelle. He broke down how the process works."[In] a formal complaint, there should be written documentation and the agency is accountable for reporting that to the Department of Justice," LaChapelle said. LaChapelle says the formal complaint process differs from an informal complaint, where someone may talk to an officer or supervisor but no documentation is required. Those interactions are not included in DOJ numbers. When it comes to two of the largest departments in the county, Team 10 found the number of complaints differ drastically. In 2018, the San Diego Sheriff's Department reported nine complaints. In 2017, there were six reported complaints.San Diego Police Department reported 74 complaints last year. In 2017, there were 97 reported to the DOJ.Each department reports to the state both substantiated and unsubstantiated complaints. 1156

San Diego (KGTV)- A music teacher at Grossmont High School reached out to the community after students were in need of guitars for the upcoming school year. The students will be practicing distance learning.Music teacher Jeremy Cook says the support has been overwhelming.“The response from the community has been absolutely amazing. I’ve met so many people. I’ve driven across the county picking up the guitars,” says Cooke.Cooke has received 117 guitars for students to practice.“Last year we had upwards of 120 guitar students total,” says Cooke. “There’s a hope to be able to offer guitars to students who aren’t able to take the class.”A couple of weeks ago, Cooke went to pick up a donation from a woman named Pam Anderson in Mission Hills.“I took it back to my car and popped it open. I was flabbergasted at what was inside. It was a 1969 Fender Telecaster.”These guitars range from ,000 to ,000. Cooke says he had to let Anderson know its value.“She said that she appreciated the honesty, and she still wanted to donate the guitar to the school,” says Cooke. “It was her husband’s who passed away. She said she knew he would want the same thing.”The guitar will be used for student performances and in the newly renovated music room when students are allowed back on campus.Cooke says he appreciates all of the donations. As a thank you to Anderson, the teacher has set up a GoFund Me page to help her during the pandemic.Cooke says there is still a need for guitars for the upcoming school year. It's back to the store. David Warren's sofa just didn't look right. So he was back at the Target store in Kearny Mesa Saturday afternoon."I'm just returning these pillows and shirts," Warren said. "I'm going to swap them out for something smaller."Fernando Delacruz and his wife bought themselves bicycles to kick start a healthy New Year's resolution."I figured I'm going to need a bike so I can exercise," Delacruz said. "And then my wife said, 'Oh that's a cool Christmas gift for me too!'"The couple bought their bikes at target.com. Delacruz's fit perfectly, but his wife's did not."When she tried it on, it was kind of a little big for her," Delacruz said. "So we have to return it."The pandemic has caused a surge in online shoppers, a saving grace for retailers. But not being able to touch and feel the products means there have been a record-setting number of returns. Experts say returns will cost companies more than billion this holiday season. But retailers have managed to make the return process much easier, many places not even requiring receipts."We do have a Target card, and they can trace it from there, so we didn't have to worry about that," Delacruz said.Delacruz says now they are at the store to return what didn't fit and replace it with one that does."We're probably going to look for another bike today," Delacruz said.According to the 2020 Deloitte Holiday Retail Survey, 45% of shoppers prefer the "buy online, return in-store or curbside" service. 1732
