The US believes that Ibrahim al-Asiri, a master al Qaeda bombmaker, is dead.The Saudi Arabian native was the mastermind behind the "underwear bomb" attempt to detonate a flight above the skies of Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009.A senior US official expressed "confidence that he was killed."Two US officials told CNN al-Asiri was killed by a CIA drone last year. The CIA is not commenting on his fate.CNN reported last week that al-Asiri may have been killed in Yemen last year, according to a UN team that tracks terrorist groups.Counterterrorism analysts say there should be significant skepticism over al-Asiri's possible demise for one major reason: His group, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, has not released any statement acknowledging his death, nor a eulogy celebrating his martyrdom.Al-Asiri is widely credited with perfecting miniaturized bombs with little or no metal content that could make it past some airport security screening. That ability made him a direct threat to the US, and some of his plots had come close to reaching their targets in the US.In addition to the "underwear bomb" attempt, al-Asiri was behind the so-called "printer bomb" plot. That plan saw him send explosive devices inside printers to the US. The two packages were being shipped from Yemen through Dubai and the UK in October 2010.Both were addressed to synagogues in Chicago.Al-Asiri appeared to have taken on a more public-facing role within al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in recent years, including purportedly recording a speech the group released in 2016.The most recent public statement attributed to him was a written speech released by the group on September 12, 2017, to coincide with the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The speech promised an ongoing war against the United States.CNN cannot independently verify he authored these statements.Few expect al-Asiri's expertise to die with him. Officials believe he trained a number of apprentices. And since 2014, US officials have been concerned that bomb-making expertise built up by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has migrated to other groups, including al Qaeda operatives in Syria.Meanwhile, ISIS is among the terrorist groups that have worked to develop laptop bombs, prompting large electronics to be temporarily banned in the cabin on certain flights to the United States and the UK from the Middle East last year. 2414
The U.S. has now recorded at least 100,000 cases of COVID-19 each day for the last three weeks.On Monday, at least 169,190 new cases of the coronavirus were recorded throughout the U.S., marking 21 consecutive days that the country has seen at least 100,000 new COVID-19 cases.During that time span — dating back to Nov. 2 — the number of people in the country hospitalized with complications from the virus has nearly doubled from 48,557 to 85,836. Currently, about 69% of those hospitalizations are occurring in the South and Midwest, meaning some hospitals in those areas — particularly rural hospitals — are currently operating at capacity.The massive spike in cases has also caused the number of deaths linked to COVID-19 on a rolling 7-day average to nearly doubled from 826 a day to 1,515 a day. The last time the U.S. saw as many deaths per day as it sees now came back in mid-May when the country was still recovering from the virus' silent and uncontained spread in early spring. Over the weekend, the U.S. surpassed 3 million new cases in November alone. The country has recorded 12.4 million cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, meaning about one-quarter of all of those cases have occurred this month alone.Despite the bleak outlook on the state of the pandemic in the country, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the county's top expert on infectious diseases, warned Monday that the pandemic could worsen further. He said that if Americans don't follow common-sense public safety measures on Thanksgiving, cases could spike even further in December."The chances are that you will see a surge superimposed on a surge," Fauci said.Fauci recommends limiting Thanksgiving gatherings to members of a single household. He also says Americans need to continue to follow five common public safety measures in order to limit the spread: Adopt uniform mask-wearing, keep social distance, avoid large crowds, gather outdoors as opposed to indoors and continuously wash hands. 1983
The United States plans to end enhanced health screening of travelers from certain countries next week, and those visitors will no longer be funneled through 15 large U.S. airports.Those requirements were imposed in January to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the government will remove those edicts beginning Monday.The CDC said the current screening, which includes temperature checks and questioning travelers about COVID-19 symptoms, “has limited effectiveness” because some infected people have no symptoms or only minor ones. Travelers go through customs only after the health screening.The health agency said that of the 675,000 travelers who went through the process, fewer than 15 were found to have COVID-19 because of the extra screening.The health agency said that instead it will focus on other measures, including a stronger response to reports of illness at airports, collecting passenger-contact electronically to avoid long lines, and “potential testing to reduce the risk of travel-related transmission” of the virus.The extra health screening applies to people who have been in China, Iran, most countries in continental Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Brazil. Most people coming from those countries who aren’t U.S. citizens have been barred entry to the country.The Homeland Security Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.A trade group representing the nation’s largest carriers praised the change.“We continue to support spending scarce screening resources where they can best be utilized,” Airlines for America said in a statement Thursday, “and, given the extremely low number of passengers identified by the CDC as potentially having a health issue, agree that it no longer makes sense to continue screening at these airports.”Separately, 18 travel and airline groups asked the administration to start pre-flight virus testing as a way to reopen international travel. The groups argue that more screening could allow countries to lift travel restrictions and quarantines that have shut down most travel between the U.S. and Europe.Airlines including Delta and Southwest have lobbied the Transportation Security Administration to screen passengers for fever before allowing them on flights within the United States. The University of Arizona and Boeing joined forces to find disinfectants that will kill COVID-19 and help make air travel safer. The project known as the Confident Travel Initiative is designed to test out cleaning solutions that can destroy the Coronavirus. Arizona microbiology professor Dr. Charles Gerba, who is known as "Dr. Germ," says he’s been working with Boeing since the summer to test cleaning products as part of the initiative to make flying as safe as possible during the pandemic and beyond.“It's really innovative to try to get a coating that will be antiviral," he said. "I think it’s the next step in hygiene and disinfection adding another barrier between when they clean and regularly disinfect aircraft. We’re looking at coatings. And anytime the virus lands on it would kill it, so you don’t have to keep disinfecting all the time."The team conducted laboratory testing by using a virus called MS2 on surfaces inside of an unoccupied plane. The virus has similar characteristics to the virus that causes COVID-19.“It would protect you from when they disinfect it or clean the aircraft. In case the virus lands again on a surface in the aircraft. We’ve been evaluating the overhead bins, the seats, the trays, the handles,” Gerba said.Cleaning solutions and ultraviolet wands were also used throughout the plane and according to Boeing, the results show that antimicrobial coatings were effective for extended periods of time and won’t be harmful to passengers. While Gerba didn’t share the names of the disinfectants, he did say the products can potentially be used on public transportation and other high traffic areas.“We actually did some of the work in the aircraft going in and contaminating certain areas like the tray in the aircraft the overhead bin and then evaluating the disinfectants to show they could kill the virus," Gerba said. "I see this new technology of self-disinfecting surfaces will revolutionize public places in cleanliness, cars, and buses you name it. These are products already on the market and they are new innovative products where you can put down a coating and it will last for hours, weeks, or maybe even months."The research project is expected to be done with other viruses by the end of the year and airplane cleanings will be done between flights.“It all has a big benefit I think it's going to add that extra barrier to me it’s the next generation of infection control and the spread of disease,” Gerba said.This story was first reported by Shawndrea Thomas at KGUN Tucson, Arizona. 2552
