ZHENGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Three city mayors were suspended from their positions Friday after three mine accidents killed 169 people in central China's Henan Province, said the provincial authorities Friday.Li Endong, mayor of Pingdingshan City, Li Junfeng, vice mayor of the city in charge of work safety, and Shen Qinghuai, vice mayor of Luoyang City in charge of work safety, were suspended Friday, pending investigations, said the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China in a statement.Pingdingshan has seen two deadly accidents since last year. At least 49 miners died after explosives detonated at Xingdong No. 2 Mine on June 21, 2010. Another deadly gas explosion killed 76 people in the Xinhua No.4 pit in Xinhua District on Sept. 8, 2009.Luoyang City was home to a gas blast that killed 44 people in a coal pit in Yichuan County on March 31, 2010.All three mines had been ordered to suspend production before the accidents but somehow operated secretly as a result of possible negligence by the safety watchdogs.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices.The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan. Further, the company's steel output in the first half of the year gained 29.75 percent year on year to 8.04 million tonnes.China's producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 6 percent in the January-June period, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics.However, the company was likely to face a "difficult time" in the second half of 2010 and meeting its full-year profit target would become a "challenging task" as demand from auto, home appliance and real estate sectors experienced "drastic changes" since July, leading to more restrained sales and falling prices, it said.Company officials also worried that high prices of iron ore, coal and electricity would further push up production costs and squeeze profit margins.On Friday, the price of its shares fell 2.87 percent to 4.73 yuan on the Shanghai bourse.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam agreed Thursday to properly deal with the maritime territorial issues in the South China Sea.This is one of the five consensus decisions made at the fourth meeting of the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation, which was co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.China and Vietnam signed a package of agreements on the demarcation of their 1,300-kilometer land boundary last November. BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, refuted on Monday recent reports online saying China is mulling adjustments of electricity prices, claiming such reports "untrue" .The NDRC said in a statement on its website that recently there were reports online saying the NDRC was studying plans to adjust electricity prices, citing Li Jing, deputy head of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection at NDRC. Reports said she has not given the timetable for the plan.The statement further said she never made such remarks to media and the reports were groundless.The NDRC began a rise in the price of electricity for non-residential use by 2.8 fen (0.4 cents) per kwh on average nationwide on November 20 last year, with residential electricity prices unchanged.

BERLIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China is gradually learning and absorbing ideas on human rights that can grow on its soil, and remains opposed to attempts by the West to impose its standards on China, says Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying.In a recent interview with the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Fu said it seems "controversial and illogical" that Western countries acknowledge China's economic success and contributions to efforts against the global financial crisis, while "definitely" turning a blind eye to China's political progress.It seems as if the West wants to say that China has achieved all these without the leadership of the government and the Communist Party, maybe in total anarchy, Fu said."I still remember when I was an interpreter in the 1980s, human rights was always on the menu in our dialogues and our European guests brought lists of names with them," she said."Thirty years later, China has moved on, and so much has changed. In 2004, protection of human rights was incorporated into China's constitution. Many relevant laws and rules have been amended accordingly," Fu said.However, European delegations still come to China with the same stance, accusing China in a commanding way, Fu said."I really don't hear much mentioning of China' s human rights progress," she said.Yet, those political extremists seem to be presenting the whole picture of China's human rights for European countries, she said.Fu believes that to know the real China, it's not enough to "single out things you are interested in, or only listen to people who talk your talk."The most important is to look at the benefits of the majority of the people, she said.
