SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Utah man who robbed a Carlsbad Motel 6 at gunpoint, then was arrested attempting to re-enter the United States, was convicted of federal robbery and firearm-related charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.Lance Lamont Lavert of Salt Lake City, 37, was convicted Tuesday by a San Diego federal court jury for the July 9, 2018, morning robbery of the motel on Paseo Del Norte.Prosecutors said Lavert and his girlfriend asked for a room, but were denied due to a lack of ID.Lavert then pointed a gun at the motel clerk and her manager, demanding money. When the clerk and manager ran, Lavert leapt over the counter, kicked in the door of the bathroom where the clerk was hiding, dragged her back to the cash register by her hair and pistol-whipped her in the head, court documents state.Along with 5 in cash, Lavert and his girlfriend made off with the clerk's car keys and stole the clerk's car, prosecutors said.Lavert was arrested two days later trying to cross the border back into the United States. The revolver he used in the robbery was found in his waistband.In addition to committing the robbery, Lavert was convicted for possession of a gun while having several prior felony convictions, including for arson in Utah and assault with a deadly weapon out of Imperial County, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.Lavert's girlfriend pleaded guilty prior to the trial, according to prosecutors. 1440

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Thursday publicly identified a 21-year-old man who was killed when the sports car he was driving crashed off a South Bay freeway connector.Jose Cruz Perez of Logan Heights lost control of the blue Nissan 350Z coupe while trying to merge onto eastbound state Route 54 from northbound Interstate 5 in National City at high speed shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Alerted by a witness who saw Perez's vehicle veer off the connector and plunge down a steep embankment just south of the Sweetwater River, California Highway Patrol officers searched the area but were unable to find the car or driver.About four hours after the accident, a worker at a shipbuilding yard alongside the freeway ramp found the wrecked Nissan in a mud pond with Perez's body partially ejected from the driver's side door, the CHP reported. 910

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Julian man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fleeing after the car he was driving struck and fatally injured a bicyclist on a rural road east of El Cajon.Craig Wendell Nelson, 56, was heading east on Dehesa Road near Singing Hills Golf Course when his 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage veered into a bike lane east of Willow Glen Drive and hit Kevin Wilson of La Mesa from behind about 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.Medics took Wilson, also 56, to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where was pronounced dead.Following the crash, Nelson allegedly kept driving to the east and south before pulling over on Sloane Canyon Road and fleeing on foot, CHP public- affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.Officers eventually found the abandoned vehicle, and a helicopter search crew spotted Nelson in a nearby brushy area. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An attempted murder charge was filed Wednesday against a woman who slit the throat of another woman at a Mira Mesa Walgreens store last weekend, in what has been described as a random attack on a complete stranger.Kelly Ann Green, 55, is accused in Saturday morning's attack on an unidentified 59-year-old woman, who suffered a five-inch laceration across her neck.Green faces 10 years in state prison if convicted of the attempted murder charge and a weapon-use allegation, according to Deputy San Diego County District Attorney Mary Naoom.The prosecutor said the victim was filling her prescription at the Walgreens at 10787 Camino Ruiz when Green approached her, grabbed her by the hair and cut her throat.RELATED: Mira Mesa family forced from home after multiple attacksOther store patrons and employees subdued Green following the attack, which was captured on ``gruesome and very disturbing'' surveillance footage, Naoom said.
