ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - An Escondido family was surprised with a life-changing gift Tuesday morning, brand new appliances for their home. The gift was made possible through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Club of America and Maytag.“When I heard my name I was speechless, I was overwhelmed," said Rosie Montejano. "I thought I was being tricked, but then I was like, no it’s us, it’s us!"Montejano's children attend the Escondido Boys & Girls Club after-school program.“The security that my kids get picked up, they’re watched, and I don’t have to worry about who’s watching my children," said Montejano. She explains it's been a difficult few years, with her older daughter battling addiction. The family adopted her daughter's two children, so now they take care of five. While Montejano can't donate financially to the Boys & Girls Club, she donates her time. She also asks her employer Walmart to donate goods to the Club whenever they can.Last year Danny Sherlock, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, won the Maytag Dependable Leader Award, which allowed him the opportunity to pay it forward to others.Montejano's generosity never went unnoticed by branch manager Dave Luevanos, who nominated her for the Maytag donation made possible through Sherlock's leadership award."I feel truly blessed today, and I am overwhelmed," said Montejano. She's looking forward to having a new refrigerator and washer and dryer in time for the holidays. 1495

Embarrassing. Cringe-worthy. Epic. Hilarious. Wildly inappropriate. Very funny. The debate is raging about Michelle Wolf's stand-up act at the White House Correspondents' Association's annual dinner. The "winners," so to speak, might be Wolf ancd President Trump. Wolf's name is trending all over social media just a few weeks before the launch of her new Netflix show. And Trump is embracing Wolf as a foil -- a symbol of liberal Hollywood elitism.Trump said on Twitter Sunday morning that she "bombed."That might be true in Washington -- where some prominent journalists joined Trump administration aides in criticizing Wolf's raunchy jokes. But other writers, activists and comedians defended Wolf for roasting both the administration and the media.Wolf seemed happy about the outcome. When former press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that the dinner "was a disgrace," Wolf replied, "Thank you!"The stand-up act is now an object of partisan warfare. Charges of hypocrisy are flying fast, with commenters on the right blasting liberal intolerance and those on the left mocking conservative victimization.Fox News correspondent Ed Henry, a past president of the association, says he wants the association to apologize to Sanders. Here's a look at the varying reactions to her roast: 1286

Every morning, Philip Staroska starts his day by logging onto his computer and wishing his class of kindergarten students in Phoenix, Arizona a good morning. The spiking COVID-19 cases have kept this life-long educator out of the classroom for longer than he could’ve ever imagined. There are days when all Staroska wants to do is give his students a hug or a high five, but instead, a virtual pat on the back over Zoom has to suffice.“I would give anything to give my kids a high five, a hug, to be able to be like, ‘hey, come on, focus.’ It’s a lot more powerful in-person than over the screen,” Staroska said. And yet, for as much as he longs to be in the classroom, Staroska knows with COVID-19 cases reaching record-high levels in his county, keeping kids and their families safe is taking precedent right now.“I would love for it to be a normal school year, but it’s not,” he added. It’s been long, challenging year for teachers like Staroska across the country. Regardless of whether learning is occurring in-person or virtually, many educators are worried the pressures of the pandemic are dramatically impacting student’s academic progress.“It’s just not the same as being in the classroom,” Staroska said. His sentiments are shared by other teachers and administrators, trying their best to navigate the challenges of learning during a pandemic. In Nashville, Tennessee, Dr. Kenyae Reese, a high school principal, is worried about the emotional impact this year is having on her high school students. In many cases, students are now taking part-time jobs to help parents who may have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.“We’re seeing high school kids who have to watch little siblings because their parents are out of work. It’s then juggling being a student, but I also have to monitor a younger sister or brother. There’s a lot more responsibility,” the principal said.“Sometimes kids are working during the day because they may be one of the breadwinners, especially right now,” she added.Another concern: attendance, especially among students who are starting to experience burnout.“Even kids who are super strong with social media and technology are struggling. We just didn’t anticipate having to go this long.” 2230

Facebook has announced it is suspending Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, over concerns about violations of the social media site's policies. On Friday, Facebook's vice president and deputy general counsel, Paul Grewal, said in a detailed statement that a University of Cambridge psychology professor, Aleksandr Kogan, had passed Facebook user data he gained through an app on to third-parties, including Cambridge Analytica -- a breach of the social media site's policies on protecting people's information. 562

Facebook and Instagram were both having issues as users reported problems with the social media sites early Tuesday morning. According to downdetector.com,  the East coast is reporting the most problems with Facebook in the United States, but issues are being reported globally as well. This is the second time this month users from all over have reported Facebook being down.Instagram users were also reporting problems, according to downdetector.com.Some of the problems with Facebook included not being able post status updates, the page not loading at all or loading very slow, not being able to send messages over Facebook's separate Messenger app and some saying they received an error message indicating the site was doing maintenance, among other issues.Instagram users reported the app not loading and showing an error message. Some people were able to access Facebook or Instagram, or both, later in the morning and without problems. Neither social media site has said what caused the problems, or when users still having issues . would be able to access the sites again.Users took to Twitter to report the outages, using the hashtags #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown. 1220
