Investors were in a rotten mood Tuesday.Seemingly good results from Dow components Caterpillar, Coca-Cola and United Technologies didn't please Wall Street. The Dow closed down 425 points, or 1.7%, after opening with a 130-point gain. At its worst point of the day, the Dow was down more than 600 points.The Dow has fallen for the past five straight days — its longest losing streak in more than a year — and has given up its gains for the year.Why the nearly 650-point swing in the Dow in a matter of hours? Once investors took a closer look at the results, they focused on the negatives.Caterpillar, for example, warned that profit margins would probably not get any higher this year than they are now.And Coke investors were disappointed that lower prices may have helped drive sales -- even though Diet Coke finally returned to growth. Shares of Caterpillar plunged 6% while Coke's stock lost 2%.Verizon was one of the few companies that posted strong results Tuesday that didn't seem to have any caveats -- and it was rewarded for it. Shares of Verizon rose 2%.But other earnings reports were downright gloomy. 3M, another Dow component, lowered its outlook for the year. That sent its stock plunging 7%. Insurance company Travelers, also in the Dow, fell 3% after its earnings missed forecasts.All this negativity dragged down other old-school, classic industrial Dow companies too. Boeing and DowDuPont both fell about 3%.And tech investors were disappointed by increased expenses at Google parent Alphabet.Related: Why everyone is stressing about the 10-year Treasury Even though Alphabet posted solid gains in earnings and revenue that easily topped Wall Street's estimates, the stock fell 5% — and that helped drag down the S&P 500, Nasdaq and tech titans Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook.It didn't help that the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note rose above 3% for the first time in more than four years Tuesday morning.If this benchmark bond rate keeps climbing, it may make it more expensive to borrow money for mortgages and auto loans and could eat into profits at big US companies — especially since the Federal Reserve is expected to keep raising short-term rates.Still, one expert said investors may be overreacting to the moves in the bond market."I don't know that there is any magic to the 3.0% level other than it is a nice round number," said Jeff Mills, co-chief investment strategist for PNC Financial Services Group. "There is no rule that says rising rates are bad for the stock market."Mills added that since 1928, stocks have actually done a little bit better when rates have gone up. The market has gained about 11% on average during years that rates have gone up and 9% in years of falling rates.But jittery investors don't seem to care about historical market facts right now. INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859

Wihl said.Frightening email says it has goods on youThe email claimed a malware program installed on her laptop caught her visiting porn sites and had a picture of her watching porn taken with her laptop's camera.Her first reaction?"It was bull, for one, because it's not something I do," she said.However, the emailer knew one of her passwords, so she was worried.Wihl's biggest fear wasn't that someone saw her doing something private. It was that a hacker had gotten into her computer, where he could have accessed all sorts of personal information."You don't know who has access and who can use your computer," she said.Fortunately, the security site Krebs on Security says this is just a scam that uses a password stolen from a data breach, possibly the 2012 LinkedIn breach.Wihl didn't send money; she knew the hackers didn't really have anything with which to embarrass her. In many ways, we have come a long way since March when the pandemic first began, but in other ways, we have not.Infections and hospitalizations around the country from COVID-19 are rising quickly, as the United States just surpassed 250,000 deaths from COVID-19. The country is also setting records for the number of positive coronavirus cases. It has forced states to consider similar shutdown measures to the ones we saw in spring.Michigan, Washington state, Oregon, and New Mexico are mostly closed, as states like Colorado have recently announced more closures coming this weekend, including moving restaurants to take-out and delivery only.“It has been very busy [in the ICU] and it has really, as you mentioned, gone up in the last two weeks,” said Dr. Julia Limes of UCHealth in Colorado.Dr. Limes has been spending the last few weeks working out logistics for the ICU at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center.“We have started deploying people from other parts in the hospital to come and help us on both the COVID floors and in the COVID ICU,” said Dr. Limes.“We already surpassed the numbers from the first surge, so it’s like what’s next?” added Maddie Smith, a critical care nurse in the hospital’s COVID-19 ICU.Smith has worked in the hospital’s COVID-19 ICU since March. She says the fear, stress, and unpredictability of this current surge might have consumed her once more if it was not for the lessons learned in the COVID-19 unit during the spring months.“We just know how to treat them better, and we know how to intervene with interventions, so that’s been really helpful,” said Smith.In the spring, hospitals were experimenting with different drugs to treat serious COVID-19 complications. Since then, the FDA has approved Remdesivir as a treatment option for certain patients 12 and older, based on findings that it helped some patients recover faster.Smith says doctors and nurses are now more familiar with the arc of how a patient might respond to symptoms so they can manage bed space and ventilator use better.All this comes as both Moderna and Pfizer announced this week they have both developed vaccines with 95 percent effectiveness.“[Caring for patients] is easier and it’s smoother than it was in the spring,” said Dr. Limes.Not only has patient care gained more clarity, but so too has self-care on the part of first responders, according to Smith.“It was hard,” she said. “I think the biggest part that got to all of us is these people don’t have family to be with. That first surge, it all hit us pretty hard because of the sadness that happened down here. We just kind of lean on each other to get through it.”How far this current wave will go is unknown, but by drawing from the past, these first responders say they will be ready to deal with it no matter what is thrown their way.“We just have a better sense of the trajectory, and that is hugely valuable as we go into this next surge,” said Dr. Limes. 2962

In the congressional debate over gun control, all eyes are on the Cabinet Room in the White House for a Wednesday afternoon meeting.As House Republicans made clear, any and all gun restrictions were off the table, and senators still grappled with what, if any, path forward they had. It's President Donald Trump who will dictate the next steps in the gun debate.Bottom line: Sweeping gun restrictions -- at this point, any gun restrictions -- are not in the cards in the Republican-led Congress. That much seems clear.
