SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An orphaned puppy at a local animal rescue will receive a state-of-the-art heart surgery to repair a rare heart murmur.Helen Woodward Animal Center said Tuesday Cowboy, a terrier-blend brought to the center last October, has an irregular heart rhythm, so intense that veterinary staff could actually feel a distinct and loud rumble if their hands were placed on his chest.The puppy was brought into the center with his mother and five siblings, all of whom have found new homes.RELATED: Puppies found abandoned in Escondido park adopted out to new homesSince Cowboy arrived at Helen Woodward, he's been cared for by center staff and a foster owner and administered a medication called Atenolol to take pressure off his heart.“We care deeply about every single orphan pet that comes into our care and go to great lengths to make sure that each one of these wonderful animals has the chance to live a long, healthy and happy life with a loving forever family,” Jennifer Shorey, Helen Woodward Animal Center Director of Operations, said. “When we learned about Cowboy’s unique condition, we didn’t hesitate to find him the expert care he needs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An exonerated marine colonel was denied release from the Camp Pendleton brig. Colonel Dan Wilson's release was denied three months after he was exonerated for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl. In July, an appellate court overturned his conviction. Since then, his family has been awaiting his release. His wife spoke to 10News over the phone just moments after his release was denied. "I was shocked and I burst into tears. This man has been in for two years and 10 months," said Susan Wilson. "If they cant believe their own court of appeals then there's a problem there."His family maintains the system has been unjust from the beginning. "I just feel as though he’s getting a really bad rap by the USMC after 38 years of service and 11 deployments," said Wilson. "It's astounding to me that they pride themselves on ‘Marines take care of their own’. Well, they haven’t taken care of us whatsoever."Col. Wilson was also convicted of unauthorized leave and conduct unbecoming of an officer. He'll stay behind bars while he awaits a re-sentencing for those charges. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report for a San Diego State student who died after falling from his bed after a night of partying revealed elevated alcohol levels.The report from the county Medical Examiner found that Dylan Hernandez, 19, died of blunt force injuries of head and ruled his death an accident. At the time of the autopsy, a toxicology report said elevated alcohol levels of 0.06 percent and cannabinoids were found in his system. However, earlier reports from campus police said he had a 0.23 percent blood-alcohol level the morning he fell.Hernandez fell from his bunk bed in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2019, after a fraternity party that night. The family said they believed campus police were not pursuing certain angles, including a possible cover-up."The Hernandez family is concerned because witnesses they provided to SDSU and UPD still have not been questioned," George Kindley, the Hernandez family's lawyer, said.Hernandez's family claims SDSU Police never sought out warrants for Snapchat videos or phone records from members of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the fraternity Hernandez was pledging to join. They said police were aware that some fraternity brothers may have instructed others to delete videos and messages that were incriminating.University police said they are aware of the autopsy results released Thursday and "will be evaluating the findings as part of the ongoing investigation." 1916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An inmate died in his cell at a San Diego jail Friday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.The man, identified as Manuel Cruz, 37, was found unresponsive alone in his jail cell at 3:46 p.m. Friday.Paramedics responded, but despite lifesaving efforts, deputies say the man died.
