SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council received a handful of presentations Tuesday intended to help the city address homelessness as well as the lack of transitional and permanent affordable housing.Entities presenting to the council included the Regional Task Force on the Homeless, San Diego County, Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, the San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego State University's Institute for Public Health and the council's Select Committee on Homelessness.Representatives from each office discussed challenges and successes fighting homelessness in San Diego last year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors Tuesday directed San Diego County's chief administrative officer to create a stronger wildfire protection plan.By a unanimous vote, the board asked Helen Robbins-Meyer to find ways to expand and more strongly support fire-safe councils, enhance pre-fire vegetation management, improve pre-fire emergency planning, strengthen fire-safety measures in new construction, and reduce loss from wildfires in existing buildings.Robbins-Meyer will work with the Fire Authority, Sheriff's Department and other relevant county departments and outside agencies to present recommendations within 90 days.There are 60,000 homes in the county's unincorporated areas that are at a high risk for wildfire, board Chairwoman Dianne Jacob said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Opening statements are scheduled Monday in the murder trial of a man accused in the 2015 shooting death of a customer during a robbery at a Clairemont-area gas station convenience store, as well as a shootout with police two days after the killing.Ahmed Hassan Mumin, 34, is charged with murder, robbery, burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the April 16, 2015, death of 48-year-old Eric Schade. Mumin also faces a special circumstance allegation that the killing happened during the course of a robbery, meaning he faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted.He's also charged with two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer for opening fire on two arresting officers in an April 18 shootout at a City Heights apartment.At his preliminary hearing, surveillance footage was shown allegedly depicting Mumin inside an Arco am/pm at around 3:45 a.m., pointing a gun at the clerk and demanding cash. The store clerk testified that the robber was wearing a dark beanie and a bandana covering his face.The clerk testified that he put the cash drawer on the counter. But Schade -- a neighborhood regular -- took a swipe at the robber's gun as if to push it out of his face, and Mumin took a step back and shot the victim once in the chest, prosecutors alleged.The footage shows the shooter rifling through the cash drawer, then fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.Two days later, officers tracked Mumin to an apartment complex on Winona Avenue in City Heights. Police officers testified that Mumin hid behind a set of doors in a community room. As a detective tried one of the doors, the defendant opened fire from behind another door, prompting the detectives to return fire, according to testimony.Mumin was shot in the abdomen by police and hospitalized.Co-defendant Adan Ibrahim -- allegedly the getaway driver -- was previously charged with murder, though that count was dismissed earlier this year by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. So through application of the state's new felony murder rule. He still faces trial on robbery charges.Ibrahim's girlfriend, Kristine Mariano, was also in the getaway car during the robbery, according to prosecutors. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City of San Diego began a virtual open house Monday to solicit public input for two potential uses for a vacant lot in the Encanto community.The city is asking the public to consider two redevelopment proposals for the Valencia Business Park located at Stevens Way and Imperial Avenue.Located in the federally designated San Diego Promise Zone, the Valencia Business Park has been vacant for more than 20 years. According to the city, the community-focused redevelopment is moving forward and expected to create at least 72 full-time jobs."For years, the vision for Southeastern San Diego has included activating the Imperial Avenue Corridor and development of the Valencia Business Park property," said Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe. "We are energized to take another crucial step in this process and get vital input from our community on this redevelopment, as we see this vision come to fruition."The first proposal is a campus for the San Diego American Indian Health Center, described as a "wellness-centered community hub" that would account for 150 healthcare jobs, including 75 new ones.The other proposal is the San Diego Energy Equity Campus, a community hub site which proposes to provide educational resources to the underserved Southeast San Diego community.The public can view the proposals and provide feedback by visiting ValenciaBusinessParkInput.org.
