WASHINGTON, Mo. - A Missouri middle schooler died this weekend due to complications from COVID-19.The School District of Washington, Missouri, said eighth-grader Peyton Baumgarth was hospitalized due to the virus's symptoms and passed away over the weekend.Superintendent Lori VanLeer said in a letter to parents, the district extends its "heartfelt sympathy" to his family and asked the public to respect their privacy.She wrote that the family asks everyone to follow COVID-19 safety precautions such as washing hands and wearing masks. "COVID-19 is real, and they want to remind students and parents to take these precautions in and outside of school," VanLeer wrote.Additional counselors will be available at the school Wednesday, according to the letter.Peyton's last day at school was Oct. 22. VanLeer said the school was informed he was in quarantine on Oct. 26.According to local media stations KMOV and KSDK, Baumgarth was the state's youngest victim of the deadly virus. We’re getting a clearer picture of housing inequalities minority families are facing.Two economists analyzed more than a decade of tax assessment and sales information for nearly 120 million homes across the country. They focused on areas where every homeowner theoretically faces the same tax rate.What they found was that minority homeowners still ended up paying a ten to 13 percent higher tax rate on average. For the median Black or Hispanic household, that could be an extra to 0 a year.They also looked at property tax appeals in Chicago, and found Black homeowners were significantly less likely to appeal their property tax assessment. This kind of data is not available nationwide, but it is believed to be a widespread issue.“So much of it is rooted in systemic and historical structures of racism. WASHINGTON (AP) — Using thousands of military troops to help secure the Southwest border will cost an estimated 0 million under current plans, the Pentagon told Congress on Tuesday, even as questions arose about the scope and duration of the controversial mission.The total includes million for approximately 5,900 active-duty troops providing support to Customs and Border Protection, plus 8 million so far for 2,100 National Guard troops who have been performing a separate border mission since April, according to a report sent to Congress on Tuesday but not released by the Pentagon.A copy of the report was obtained by The Associated Press. After the AP published its story the Pentagon released a statement confirming the active-duty portion of the deployments is estimated at million.
