CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts.The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states.That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online.The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark.The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too.This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores.But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny. Another insurer merger proposed by Anthem and Cigna died as well.Since then, the lines between health insurers and the pharmacy giants have grown increasingly blurred and incestuous.Anthem recently started up its own PBM, called IngenioRX, and has partnered with CVS.And Walgreens has partnered with a Blue Cross-backed PBM Prime Therapeutics to form a new mail order pharmacy company.Merlo and other CVS executives did not address any of the Aetna chatter on the conference call.But if the rumors are true -- and if an Aetna deal passed antitrust scrutiny -- then CVS appears to be on its way towards building a formidable health care/retail giant that may avoid getting Amazon-ed.  2507

CLEVELAND, Ohio — An 11-year-old boy stole his parents' SUV and led police on a high-speed before crashing it late Sunday night, Brooklyn, Ohio police confirmed Monday.WEWS television station has confirmed, through a police report, that this is the same boy who at 10 years old led Ohio State Highway Patrol on a 100 mph chase last fall.It started at 10:59 p.m. when Brooklyn police saw a black Dodge Durango pull into the driveway of a former city fire station. The 11-year-old fled from police and traveled out of the fire station and onto Memphis Avenue.Police pursued the vehicle heading eastbound on Memphis Avenue to Pearl Road.The 11-year-old continued to drive recklessly, reaching speeds higher than 70 mph. When Parma Heights police received a call from the boy's father at 11:06 p.m., saying his son was driving the Dodge Durango, officers from the Brooklyn Police Department canceled the pursuit.At 11:30 p.m., police spoke to the boy's father who received a call telling him that his son crashed into a parked truck in the area of 958 West Schaff in Cleveland.The boy was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with minor injuries. He told officers that he was not being pursued when he crashed into the SUV.Felony charges will be filed on the driver in juvenile court, police said. 1325

CINCINNATI, Ohio — While the United States and allies began military operations intended to cripple Syria's ability to use chemical weapons, a local doctor was waiting nervously to hear if his family was OK. Dr. Humam Akbik was born in Syria. He now lives in the Tri-State, but his mom, sister and brother still live in Damascus. As the military operation got underway Friday night (Saturday morning in Syria), Akbik said he received a text from his wife's family that the city was shaking and there was smoke everywhere."We couldn't get in touch with them for a few hours," he said. "That was pretty unnerving."Thankfully, Akbik's family members were all OK.Akbik said he hopes the airstrikes were effective in sending a message to the Syrian government that the use of chemical weapons isn't acceptable."It looks like there's a new norm of using chemical weapons ... I think it's time for the international community in such a civilized world to step in and say, 'No. The use of a chemical weapon, it's never going to be the norm,'" Akbik said. "There will be a line drawn in the sand and it's going to be a hard line this time. We'll stop it no matter what."Helping refugeesAkbik is part of a nonprofit organization called Atlantic Humanitarian Relief. Within a week, he'll be on his way to Jordan to help refugees."It's fascinating and amazing when you see how the good in humanity is still there," he said. The organization delivers medical and dental help, including providing medications for refugees. They even teach English, math and physics. Akbik said there's power in knowledge."Each person will be able to fight back against terrorism," he said. "To extend, and be a part of the solution, rather than being a part of the problem."Above all, the group aims to give people hope."We let them know, 'Don't be despaired because there are people outside who still care about you, think of you, and who are trying to do their best to help you,'" Akbik said.
