SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The first of five "fee-free" days at America's national parks falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this month.Entrance to any of the country's more than 400 national parks is waived on Jan. 20 in honor of MLK's birthday, including at San Diego's Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma.Guests can take in panoramic views of downtown San Diego and the surrounding bay while learning about 16th century explorers and San Diego's discovery in 1542. Films are shown daily covering Cabrillo and the monument's history, and living history reenactors walk guests through the Age of Exploration.RELATED: San Diego to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. at annual paradeThere are also bunkers lining the cliff side of Fort Rosecrans that date back to World War II and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse for visitors to check out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Golden State Killer crime spree may have ties to San Diego, according to District Attorney Summer Stephan.Investigators say DNA evidence tied Joseph DeAngelo to the series of killings, rapes and burglaries that occurred between 1976 and 1986 across California.Stephan said Thursday that unsolved cases may be linked to the crimes. 361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history.In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara.Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of killing his parents and sister in a Logan Heights house fire pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday. Wilber Romero, 26, is facing charges that include first-degree murder and arson in the October 13 blaze. The fire started around 4:30 a.m. on the 3100 block of Clay Street. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, Nicolasa Maya-Romero, 46, and Iris Romero, 21, died at the hospital in the days following the blaze.The family’s 23-year-old daughter remains hospitalized. A 16-year-old son, who was injured when he escaped out a window, was released following treatment. Wilber is being held on million bail and faces life in prison if convicted. Court documents show the fire wasn’t the first time he allegedly targeted his family. Wilber reportedly attacked his father with a brick and rocks and damaged his car in September of 2018.The incident prompted a police standoff that ended when police shot bean bags at Wilber and released a police dog, documents show.The documents go on to state Wilber was in a car accident when he was 6-years-old and that he has suffered from a learning disability since the crash.According to the documents, Wilber also struggled with drug addiction. 1461

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten people were arrested in a suspected smuggling incident after border officials stopped a boat off the coast of Coronado this week.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents say a boat was spotted just west of Coronado at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents said the vessel was traveling from Mexican waters into U.S. territory.A crew was sent out to stop the suspected smuggling boat and 10 people were found aboard. The boat had been traveling without lights on and was spray painted black, according to agents.The individuals on the boat, all male Mexican citizens ages 18 to 55, were taken back to shore and turned over to Border Patrol, CBP said."It’s dangerous to travel on a crowded boat, out at sea, with no lights, and these smugglers took the added step of spray-painting the hull black so they would be difficult to spot at night," said Christopher Hunter, Deputy Director of Marine Operations for CBP in San Diego. "Smuggling organizations aren’t considering anyone’s safety when these make these illegal attempts, only what profits they can try to make."The 10 men were due to be returned to Mexico, CBP said. 1166
