SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego Health professor is one of 85 members in the health and medicine field elected to this year's class of the National Academy of Medicine, UCSD announced today.Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado is the chair and founder of UCSD's Department of Biomedical Informatics."Bioinformatics and big data are increasingly a foundation and driver of modern medicine. Lucila is an undisputed expert and pioneer in both," said Dr. David Brenner, UCSD's vice chancellor of health sciences. "Her leadership and dedication to scientific excellence make her an ideal NAM member. We are proud of the many research and education programs she has built here, helping UC San Diego remain a leader in these critical fields."The 2018 academy class includes 75 regular members and 10 international members. Current members elect new members each year, focusing on medical professionals who have made significant contributions in the medical science, health care and public health fields. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a motorist involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian last week in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood.The 48-year-old victim was standing next to a parked vehicle along the west curb line of the 5300 block of Chollas Parkway shortly before 1 a.m. Friday when a dark-colored car traveling to the south at high speed on the wrong side of the street hit him, according to San Diego police.Following the fatal impact, the motorist stopped momentarily, then drove off, Officer Robert Heims said.The victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Surveillance cameras captured images of the vehicle -- a four-door sedan, possibly a Lexus or Toyota with a lowered suspension. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly posed as a maintenance worker in order to burglarize residences across San Diego County was charged Thursday with burglary and other felonies that could have him facing more than 300 years in prison.Corey Henson, 45, is suspected in burglaries in San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon, Vista and San Ysidro that occurred between August of last year and this February.Deputy District Attorney Daniel Shim said Henson could face 339 years and four months to life if convicted of all counts, due to numerous prior convictions, which include burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Animal Planet TV series focusing on the San Diego Zoo and the zoo's Safari Park will premiere Saturday, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes view of the zoo's daily activities."The Zoo: San Diego" will debut with two one-hour episodes titled "Welcome to Our World" and "New Day for an Old Tortoise." The series will follow animal care staff members, veterinarians, scientists and researchers at the zoo, Safari Park and the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.The first episode will feature a baby klipspringer's birth and first days at the zoo, research into why a species of pit viper is having spinal issues and conservation work on the California condor population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was injured by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday while walking on the curb line of a street in the Midway District.The victim was walking at 2:56 a.m. in the 3800 block of Camino Del Rio West when an unknown vehicle struck her and fled the scene, according to Officer S. Foster of the San Diego Police Department.She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, Foster said.The Traffic Division of the police department is investigating the hit and run. 497
