WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amid the bright orchids of the U.S. Botanic Garden sits a 200-year history of protecting America’s most fragile plants.“We're a living repository for rare and endangered plants,” said Saharah Moon Chapotin, director of the garden.The U.S. Botanic Garden is the oldest one in the country, an idea envisioned by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It’s about to celebrate its 200th year. About 60,000 plants, lying within several acres in the heart of Washington, D.C.Conservation at the garden is always in season.“Many of our plants are rare and endangered and we are providing a home for them,” Chapotin said.Here in the U.S. there are 1,300 species that are considered threatened or endangered. Nearly 20 percent of those are plants adding up to hundreds of flora on the brink.Some already fell off the cliff, like Hawaii’s “Cabbage on a Stick.” Because of overdevelopment, the insect that pollinated it disappeared and in 2014, the plant went extinct in the wild, too.There are others endangered, too, like a cactus from Arizona and bushes which are native to Florida. Endangered plants don’t always get the kind of attention endangered animals do.“Often people do think about animals they have faces and they're sort of cute,” USBG deputy director Susan Pell. “So, we kind of think people generally can sort of sympathize with them a little bit more, than maybe with a plant that they're not familiar with.”At the garden, they emphasize how much plants are tied to the habitat of endangered animals, at risk from invasive species, development and climate change.“They're really interconnected and so I think plants are a fundamental part of conserving environment and conserving habitats,” Chapotin said. “And if you just focus on conserving the animals you're leaving out a huge part of the equation in terms of the plants.”That all adds up to a continuing mission of saving plants there in the hopes of one day taking those that are now extinct outside the walls and reintroducing them back to Mother Nature. 2049

While Florida might be spared from a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian, the same might not be true for the Carolinas. The National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane warnings, which as of Tuesday evening, now extend to Surf City, N.C. A hurricane watch has been issued for the North Carolina coast north of Surf City. Meanwhile, the entire South Carolina coast is under a hurricane warning. Why?The forecast for Dorian calls for the eye to brush the Carolina coast. The official forecast has the center of Dorian near Charleston, S.C. by Thursday afternoon. The track could take Dorian inland, or out to sea. Regardless, the National Hurricane Center said that Dorian's expanse of damaging winds is growing in size, even as Dorian's top wind speeds have decreased. Hurricane-force winds now extend 60 miles from Dorian's center, and tropical storm-force winds extend 175 miles. Even if Dorian's center narrowly misses the coast, residents near the South and North Carolina coastlines could see hurricane-force winds on Thursday and Friday.As of 6 p.m. Thursday, Dorian's had top winds of 110 MPH - 1 MPH shy of major hurricane status. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Dorian will maintain category 2 status while increasing the size of its wind field. Although a direct hit us unlikely, much of the Virginia coast is under a tropical storm watch as Dorian's large expanse of winds could make for tropical storm conditions for Virginia Beach. 1472

The debate will be divided between two nights - this Wednesday and Thursday. The debate will be aired on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo from 9-11 p.m. ET both nights. The rulesCandidates will have to talk fast as each candidate will only get 60 seconds to respond to each question and 30 seconds for follow-ups, according to NBC News. The candidates will not be afforded an opening statement, but will be allowed to deliver a closing statement. One reason is many Democrats see an opportunity to win in 2020 with Trump’s disapproval rating consistently above 50 percent, according to Gallup. A second reason is that the DNC has changed its nominating rules, taking power away from so-called “Super Delegates” and allowing the primaries and caucuses to solely decide the party’s nominee. But if polling is any indication, Thursday has the stronger candidates. Four of the top five candidates will be on the stage on Thursday, according to last week’s poll released by Mammoth University. Frontrunner Joe Biden along with Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Mayor Pete Buttigieg will share a stage Thursday. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is the only candidate among the top 5 who will be on stage Wednesday. What will be discussed?President Donald Trump, obviously. A Mommouth University poll from February showed that electability is a strong consideration for Democrats. Of those surveyed, 56 percent of Democrats said that they would prefer a candidate who could beat Trump rather than a candidate they would agree with. Just 33 percent said the opposite. With that in mind, it is safe to say some candidates will go after Trump rather than trying to win points with policy. That doesn’t mean Democrats on the stage won’t be challenged. Will Biden be challenged on his comments about working with senators who supported segregation? Will Buttigieg be asked about his handling of a recent police-involved shooting in South Bend, Ind? What about Sanders’ plan to erase student loan debt in the US? These are all likely questions to come up. When are the primaries and caucuses?The first caucus is in Iowa on February 3.
