The shortest day in what feels like the longest year has arrived. Monday is the Winter Solstice, the day each year when there is the least amount of sunshine in the Northern Hemisphere. The Winter Solstice is the official first day of winter, which lasts until March 20, 2021. It’s when the sun appears at its most southern position in the sky.If it has felt like the world has been getting darker and darker the last six months, that’s because it kind of has been. As the sun spent less and less time shining on the Northern Hemisphere. The closer a person is to the North Pole, the less time they will see the sun. People in Nome, Alaska will only have roughly 3 hours and 54 minutes of sunshine on Monday. There will now begin to be slightly more daylight each day until the Summer Solstice, which is on June 20, 2021.In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the opposite: it’s the day each year with the most sunshine and marks the beginning of summer in places like Australia, Argentina and South Africa. Many traditional celebrations on the solstice were canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Including at the world famous Stonehenge, where there is usually a large annual celebration on the solstices. 1222
The second night of the Republican National Convention was one that featured three Trumps not named Donald, and also had its share of controversy. Before Tuesday’s festivities commenced, the Republican Party booted Mary Ann Mendoza from its slate of speakers following an anti-Semitic remark on Twitter. The evening also included an address from current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who became the first active secretary of state in recent times to speak at a major political convention, prompting questions from Democrats whether the speech was a violation of government ethic rules.President’s family takes center stage at RNCTwo of President Donald Trump children, along with his wife Melania, were featured during Tuesday’s portion of the convention. Their speeches followed one given by Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. on Monday. While generally the family of candidates avoid partisan attacks, Eric Trump went after after Joe Biden and the Democrats.“He is a career politician who has never signed the front of a check and does not know the slightest thing about the American worker or the American business,” Eric Trump said.Tiffany Trump, who graduated from law school earlier this year, related to those struggling to find work amid the coronavirus pandemic."Like so many students across the world, I graduated from law school during the pandemic,” Tiffany Trump said. “As a recent graduate, I can relate to so many of you who might be looking for a job. My father built a thriving economy once, and believe me... he will do it again."The evening concluded with remarks from First Lady Melania Trump, who spoke from the newly-remodeled White House Rose Garden.Melania Trump also acknowledged the impact the coronavirus has had on the US, which has claimed nearly 180,000 American lives, and the jobs of millions of Americans.“I want to acknowledge the fact that since March, our lives have changed drastically,” the first lady said. “The invisible enemy, COVID-19, swept across our beautiful country. And impacted all of us. My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one and my prayers are with those who are ill or suffering. I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless. I want you to know you are not alone."Unlike her stepson Eric, Melania said she would not attack Joe Biden.“I don't want to use this precious time attacking the other side, because, as we saw last week, that kind of talk only serves to divide the country further,” she said.Trump hosts citizenship ceremony at the White HouseIn an unusual sight that mixed politics and official business, the president hosted a citizenship ceremony for five permanent residents turned citizens.“Today America rejoices as we welcome five absolutely incredible new members into our great American family. You are now fellow citizens of the greatest nation on the face of God’s earth. Congratulations," Trump told the new US citizens. To Trump, the moment reflected an opportunity to promote legal immigration over those who come to the US illegally.“You followed the rules, you obeyed the laws, you learned your history, embraced our values, and proved yourselves to be men and women of the highest integrity,” Trump said. “It’s not so easy. You went through a lot, and we appreciate you being here with us today.”Anti-abortion speaker in Twitter spat during RNCAbby Johnson, a former employee of Planned Parenthood who spoke out against the organization, was in the midst of a Twitter war moments before she spoke during the RNC.Johnson said that she stood by comments she previously made that voting should only be open to the head of the household. In May, Johnson tweeted, "Then they would have to decide on one vote. In a Godly household, the husband would get the final say."“Yes. So shocking! A husband and wife who are in agreement and a wife who honors her husband as the head of the home. Gasp!! What a weird, biblical concept,” Johnson tweeted on Tuesday in response to the May tweets.Johnson later added, “I would never try to prevent women from voting.” 4062
The Trump administration on Thursday imposed penalties on 17 individuals over their alleged roles in the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The fresh sanctions from the Treasury Department come hours after Saudi prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty for five people charged in the death of Khashoggi, who was a contributor to The Washington Post."The Saudi officials we are sanctioning were involved in the abhorrent killing of Jamal Khashoggi," said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a statement. "These individuals who targeted and brutally killed a journalist who resided and worked in the United States must face consequences for their actions."The secretary said the US government would work "diligently" to obtain all the facts on the death of Khashoggi and hold "accountable" any individual found responsible."The Government of Saudi Arabia must take appropriate steps to end any targeting of political dissidents or journalists," he said.Mnuchin had previously told reporters it would be "premature" to discuss whether the US would impose sanctions on the Saudi government.Earlier on Thursday, the Saudi Public Prosecutor's office said a total of 11 people were charged, adding that the five people facing capital punishment were directly involved in "ordering and executing the crime."The prosecution also shared details of the journalist's murder, saying Khashoggi was killed on October 2 following "a fight and a quarrel" at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Prosecutors say Khashoggi was tied up and injected with an overdose of a sedative that killed him, then his body was chopped up and given to a local collaborator. 1668
The Republican nominee for a US House seat in Illinois has said the September 11 terrorist attacks were an inside job and that singer Beyonce Knowles has ties to the Illuminati.Bill Fawell is running against incumbent Democratic Rep. Cheri Bustos in Illinois' 17th District, where she won by 20 points in 2016 even though the district also voted narrowly for Donald Trump. Fawell won his uncontested primary in March. He has not reported any fundraising to the Federal Election Commission, per publicly available records.A KFile review reveals Fawell, a real estate broker, pushed conspiracy theories in blogs and his 2012 book, "New American Revolution."In his book, Fawell pushed a conspiracy theory that 7 World Trade Center collapsed as part of a controlled demolition and the attacks were a plot to destroy documents."Go to YouTube and punch in 'Building #7' It's the third building that went down with the twin towers on 9/11," Fawell wrote. "Nothing hit this building, not a thing, and it fell entirely upon its own. If it looks like a standard commercial implosion demolition, it's because that is exactly what it is.""It's interesting to note that the clandestine branch of the CIA was housed on the top floor," he added. "No personnel were lost, but any and all documents were destroyed, just like a giant shredder. The Pentagon was hit in a wing being remodeled (but few people), that held a mountain of paperwork regarding 1 trillion dollars which the Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, was having trouble accounting for. That mountain of paperwork became a pile of ash."In a February 2013 post on the blog of a political action committee he established in 2012 called Elect a New Congress, Fawell said that Beyonce's husband, rapper Jay-Z, "has a long history of serving up the godless Illuminati" and shared a YouTube video that speculated that Beyonce's upcoming halftime performance at the Super Bowl would have Illuminati symbolism. The Illuminati is a secret society that serves as the basis for a popular conspiracy theory that alleges that many of the world's leaders and celebrities are masterminding world events. In the same blog post, Fawell said that the previous Super Bowl's halftime show, performed by Madonna, was satanic and influenced by the Illuminati. He also called Madonna a "narcissist skank with the crooked teeth."In an interview with CNN, Fawell stood by his blog posts and the theories he espoused on them. He said that Jay-Z and Beyonce expressed their support for the Illuminati in their videos, and that singer Taylor Swift had as well.In explaining his rationale that 7 World Trade Center didn't collapse on its own, he said, "There's no way that 1,500-degree jet fuel can melt steel that requires 2,500-degree temperatures to melt." He also acknowledged that he didn't expect any support from the national Republican Party apparatus. The Illinois Republican Party did not respond to a request for comment.Another Illinois Republican nominee for a House seat, neo-Nazi Arthur Jones, has been rejected by national Republicans and the state party for denying the Holocaust. In a 2014 post, Fawell speculated that New York City was going to be destroyed in a false flag attack by the deep state in either the year 2016 or 2017."New York City is going to be destroyed in the biggest, baddest false flag attack ever made by any organization upon the American People in a Pearl Harbor redux," Fawell wrote. (False flag attacks are acts designed by perpetrators to look like they were carried out by other individuals or groups.)He said that the attack would be made in an attempt to drag America into war, and that financial institutions were already withdrawing money from New York in preparation for the supposed attack. In another post in 2014, he wrote that then-President Barack Obama created false flag attacks to shore up support for his foreign policy intervention against ISIS.In addition to alleging conspiracies, Fawell used sexist and racist slurs against politicians. In one 2013 post he called former Secretary of State Colin Powell an "Uncle Tom" and called former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a "bitch" as well as a witch. He also regularly called Obama "Barry Soetoro" and sometimes called him "Barry Goddamn Soetoro Barack Hussain (sic) Obama."When Obama lived in Indonesia as a child he sometimes was known as Barry Soetoro, as Soetoro was his stepfather's last name. Many conspiracy theorists allege that Soetoro is his real last name and use it to argue that he was not born in the United States.The-CNN-Wire 4578
The Walt Disney Co. is planning to lay off 28,000 workers in its theme parks division in California and Florida. The company has been squeezed by limits on attendance at its parks and other restrictions due to the pandemic. Officials said Tuesday that two-thirds of the planned layoffs involve part-time workers but they ranged from salaried employees to nonunion hourly workers. In addition to the 28,000 nonunion workers, Disney said it is discussing next steps with unionized cast members.Disney’s parks closed last spring as the pandemic started spreading in the U.S. The Florida parks reopened this summer, but the California parks have yet to reopen as the company awaits guidance from the state of California.Disney along with local officials, have pressured California officials to resume operations at Disneyland. Disneyland has been ordered to remain closed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.Newsom said a month ago that he would have an announcement soon on plans to allow for a reopening of amusement parks in California, including Disneyland.“In light of the prolonged impact of COVID-19 on our business, including limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic – exacerbated in California by the State’s unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen – we have made the very difficult decision to begin the process of reducing our workforce at our Parks, Experiences and Products segment at all levels, having kept non-working Cast Members on furlough since April, while paying healthcare benefits,” said Josh D’Amaro, Disney Parks chairman. “Approximately 28,000 domestic employees will be affected, of which about 67% are part-time. We are talking with impacted employees as well as to the unions on next steps for union-represented Cast Members.” 1872
