Working in the health care industry can impact the mind and body.“I’ve been a nurse for seven years and this pandemic has been the most stressful time of my nursing career,” registered nurse Hugo Mercardo said.Mercardo says working 12-hour shifts on the front lines during the COVID-19 crisis has left him tired and hungry.“I just pretty much stuff my food and take a quick lunch and go back on the floor,” he said.Mercardo says the hospital he works at in Southern California is understaffed and many of his coworkers are overworked. To help cope with the stresses, many health care workers are eating too much or not enough.“I think it’s mostly due to stress because we use eating as a way to get that immediate comfort after a shift,” Mercardo said.Erratic eating patterns are becoming more common among health care workers nationwide.“I think in this time of COVID, people are starting to crack because of it,” said Philip Mehler, M.D., founder and executive medical director at ACUTE, the country’s only intensive care unit for people who have the most extreme forms of eating disorders.“The stress of the of the illness is causing more anxiety more depression,” Mehler said.During the pandemic, the number of health care providers seeking treatment for eating disorders at ACUTE has quadrupled compared to last year. In the last eight weeks, that number has grown even more.“Health care workers tend to minimize their own illnesses, they tend to wait until they’ve got more severe to go in for care,” Mehler said, adding that many eating disorders are curable. As the number of COVID cases continue to climb, however, he predicts so will the number of health care workers experiencing eating disorders.“The longer this goes on, the more there’s a need for resiliency,” Mehler said. “It beats you down after a while.”Moving forward on the front lines, Mercardo and his coworkers will be taking a closer look at their caloric intake as this crisis continues.“Our bodies need to be at a maximum level to handle the stress that we have going on at work,” he said. 2071

With Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and many others apps having chat features, it can be increasingly difficult for parents to know who is talking to their child.Several years ago, parents warned children about using chatrooms, but now those conversations can take place on popular apps.Mary Murphy has five children younger than age 5. Right now, she limits screen time, but knows she'll need to adjust as they get older."When they get older like driving we should probably give them a phone for safety," Murphy said. "But I don't know much before that. It's just so dangerous to let your kid have a phone and not know what they're doing on it."Grandmother Kathleen Hamilton can't even comprehend having to track her children in the digital age."We didn't have the internet, we didn't have a smartphone," Hamilton said. "You have to really watch as a parent a lot more than I had to because there wasn't that openness with a computer and your name and your email. There wasn't any of that."While many apps students use have chat features, there are apps parents can use as well.Parents in Arizona are crediting the Sentry Parental Control app with helping them find inappropriate messages sent to their child from a teacher, who has since been charged.Other monitoring apps include Flexispy and Qustodio, among many others. Some monitoring apps are more expensive and some are more invasive on a child's privacy. In the end, parents are encouraged to research different apps and figure out what's best for their family.Murphy says that's her plan."As they get older, definitely discussing with them what's on the internet and but then using what's available to parents," she said.  1743

for setting an illegal trap in Missoula, Montana, that killed a young dog.Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks regional supervisor Randy Arnold says the illegal trap was set near the Clark Fork River off of Hiberta Street.A family with their dog were recreating in that area on Sunday, when their 17-month old dog was caught in the trap and died. The two men were cited with state charges; one count of failure to appropriately mark the trap and one count of an illegal ground set. Missoula Animal Control also cited the men for illegally trapping within city limits.Arnold says this was uncommon and very disappointing, saying setting illegal traps in obvious public places is something state wildlife agencies do not condone."By setting traps in a way in violation of how ground sets need to be set, puts at risk dogs and anybody recreating in the area," Arnold said. "Those regulations are in place to prevent these things from happening. If someone violates these regulations then you get these really unfortunate accidents."This article was written by Melissa Rafferty for KPAX. 1084

It's much bigger and customizable. Brannen uses foot pedals to give his hands a break. Leif Nelson, who runs the National Veterans Sports Programs for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, thinks the controller is about more than just gaming. “It’s allowing veterans to connect with each other and, you know, it’s also allowing folks to be able to connect with their friends and their families,” Nelson said.“Once they get in the groove, it’s really cool to see them getting in the flow,” said Colleen Virzi, who is a recreation therapist at the VA. She works with Brannen and other veterans. Sometimes her job means “training” vets on how to use the controller. “Their disability kind of goes away and they’re able to play just like their peers," Virzi said. “You have the ability to sort of rekindle the camaraderie. There’s trash talking involved, there’s competition involved and these sorts of things are what drive us, we’re finding it’s something that drives our veterans,” Nelson said. The controller gives Brannen an avenue to strengthen his relationship with his son. He hopes they have a lot more gaming to do. 1129

in Seymour, Indiana, on Thursday morning.According to information from Safe Haven Baby Boxes, a healthy baby was safely surrendered in the baby box at the Seymour fire station. The baby was immediately transported to a local hospital for care."We are proud to have this resource available for the residents of Seymour, Indiana," Fire Chief Brad Lucas said in a release. "We strive everyday to ensure the safety of our residents and this is just a way to ensure the safety of newborns."The baby box in Seymour became available last year when Hunter Wart, a high school senior, raised the money to place the box in the fire station. The fire department was notified by the alarm as soon as the newborn's mother opened the outside door to place the baby in the box. Within 60 seconds, the newborn baby was retrieved from the box and received medical care. "This mother loved this child and it takes a very special person to want what's best for a child and know that it's not her," Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said. "That's the ultimate act of selflessness. I'm so thankful she chose a safe place to surrender her child and not a dumpster or trash can like we see too many times."This is the fifth baby surrendered in a baby box in the past two years in Indiana and the third to be surrendered in the past 134 days.According to information from Safe Haven Baby Boxes, the company has helped 68 women and infants with safe surrenders, assisted with 6 adoption plans, and have referred hundreds to pregnancy crisis centers around the country. The Safe Haven Baby Boxes Crisis Line (1-866-99Baby1) is available for women to speak to a licensed counselor if they are considering surrendering their baby and also to provide ongoing counseling to women who have surrendered. There are 21 active baby boxes in Indiana and 25 boxes in three states. 1858
