EDINBURGH, Britain, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here on Sunday for a four-day official visit to Britain.Upon his arrival, Li said in a statement delivered at the airport that recent years have seen steady progress in China-Britain relations and that increasingly strong political ties and fruitful cooperation across the board have brought real benefits to the peoples in both countries."In the midst of profound changes of the global landscape, closer cooperation between China and Britain will not only benefit the two counties and peoples, but also contribute to world peace, stability and prosperity," he added.Li stressed that he hopes to explore with the British side ways to cooperate more closely and turn the two countries into partners of mutual respect and equality in the political arena, partners of mutual benefits and shared growth on the economic front and partners of close coordination and equal cooperation on international affairs.Edinburgh is Li's first stop in Britain. BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese president Hu Jintao has urged medical units to take all efforts to cure those wounded when fighting a deadly fire on a grassland in the country's southwest.A strong gust of wind whipped up a blaze that engulfed fire fighters and local residents who were trying to put out embers in a mountain valley in Daofu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province Sunday afternoon.The fire left 22 dead and injured many before it was finally put out Monday morning. The dead included soldiers and civilians.According to Li Bing with the provincial health bureau, the injured have been sent to the provincial capital of Chengdu for treatment.

BEIJING, Dec.25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang said that China's tax officials should continue to promote reform in the tax system and improve services to contribute to the country's economic development and social harmony.Li made the remarks in a written instruction to a recently-held national conference on taxation, which coordinated next year's working plans for the tax administration system.Li called on tax officials to further enact structural tax reductions, promote tax reforms, strengthen tax collections and management and improve services for taxpayers.Chinese tax officials should work to allow taxation to play a more important role in the transformation of economic development patterns, adjust income distribution and improve people's livelihoods, Li said.
