LAWRENCE, Kan. - University of Kansas head football coach Les Miles has been diagnosed with COVID-19, the Jayhawks athletic department announced Thursday.Miles said he learned he had tested positive earlier in the day and was “beginning the isolation process at my home.”KU, which is 0-3 in 2020, has a bye this weekend and isn't scheduled to play again until Oct. 6 at West Virginia, and Miles “will continue to fulfill my head coach responsibilities remotely.”He will not, however, be present at Jayhawks practices unless and until he has recovered.“Although I will not physically be able to attend a practice, for the time being, I will be using the technology available for remote working to stay connected during staff meetings, meetings with players, etc.,” Miles said in a statement.Kansas Director of Athletics Jeff Long said Miles’ case was caught through the program’s surveillance testing protocols.“At this time, we believe he will be able to continue to perform his head coaching duties,” Long said in a statement. “Based on the other test results, no other coaches tested positive. (KGTV) - A woman in Lakeside has set up a cabinet full of "Goodies to Share" for homeless people living near Cactus Park.Barbara DeYoung says she got the idea from the "Little Free Libraries" she sees in her neighbors' yards."You just go very freely and get something. It's just people sharing with you," she says. "It's a very nice feeling, and I thought for sure they would love that."She set up the cabinet near the San Vincente Creek that runs behind Cactus Park, an area where several homeless people have set up encampments."I felt these are wonderful human beings. But they have problems. They have situations they can't control," DeYoung explains. "But they can read a book in the evening. They can play games, whatever they need to do."Rather than filling the cabinet with food, DeYoung stocks it with comfort items like books, blankets, wipes, playing cards, and other things that aren't usually available to homeless people at shelters or service offices.DeYoung says it's about feeding their souls and showing them respect and love, rather than just handing them food.The cabinet has already become a hit. DeYoung had to restock it just a few days after she first set it up. And just a few minutes after she refilled the cabinet, our cameras caught a man coming up from the creek bed to grab some wipes out of it.He asked not to be identified but says it feels good to know that people care.Meanwhile, DeYoung doesn't believe it will attract more homeless people to the area, but it will make life more bearable for the ones already there."I don't think boxes of raisins are going to bring armies of people here," she says. LEXINGTON, Ky. — A car wash in Lexington, Kentucky is offering a wash, a shine, and a scare this Halloween season.Rainstorm Car Wash has transformed its facility into the ‘Tunnel of Terror,’ a family friendly event that will be held every Friday and Saturday night until Halloween.“With all the COVID stuff, a lot of haunted houses weren't open or anything like that,” said Reese Kemp, the manager of Rainstorm's Lexington location. “So we figured let's have a great time.”When Gov. Andy Beshear unveiled his plan for a safe Halloween, he urged people to avoid haunted houses, citing the likelihood that COVID-19 could spread in such tight quarters.Those concerns don’t really apply to a haunted car wash."When you're in your car, you don't have to worry about getting within six feet,” Kemp notes. “Your windows are up the entire time, the [employees] can have a blast and you don't have to worry about coming into contact or spreading or anything like that.”While your car is getting washed, people will notice employees dressed up as scary characters, trailing the cars to give families a fright.As part of the event, Rainstorm has partnered with local food banks. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Extreme heat remains a top concern for the Southern Nevada Health District. With more than 100 heat-related deaths reported last year, volunteers and health coordinators spent Friday and Saturday surveying Clark County residents on how they were affected by the summer heat.The efforts are part of a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response technique.Jeff Quin, the senior public health preparedness planner at SNHD, says heat exhaustion remains a priority. "We had 123 deaths in 2017 that were heat related and 40 percent of those occurred during the month of July," he said. The summer's sweltering temperatures affect those at home and on the streets. "It's not unique to anyone. Our access and function need population which includes the homeless is a high concern but also children, and our senior Americans," said Quinn.Volunteers Jorge and Rebecca are out surveying the southeast side of Las Vegas. They are hoping residents will fill out a 21-question survey."Mostly we are asking some basic information: do they have water and food for at least three days, where they would go for a cooling station," said Rebecca. "Then we are going to get the results and it's going to inform everybody in the community," said Jorge.Clark County resident Timothy Martin was once vulnerable to the valley's hot weather."After I had that heatstroke, [the doctor] told me, I can't go out, ‘you're going to get nauseous and dizzy,’ and I do.
