BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers from across the country have gathered in Beijing for the upcoming Third Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC).NPC deputies from central China's Henan Province arrived in Beijing by train at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, becoming the last group to reach the country's capital city for the annual parliament session, which is scheduled to begin Friday.Aside from reviewing the government's work report for last year, voting on the central and local governments' draft budgets for 2010, discussing an amendment to the Electoral Law and mapping out this year's development blueprint, the lawmakers will also take part in three rounds of online dialogues with the public.The three online dialogues would be held on March 5, March 11, and March 12, respectively.The lawmakers would be joined by officials from the Ministry of Health, the Supreme People's Court, and the Supreme People's Procuratorate during the online dialogues.The NPC session's press center has begun soliciting questions for the three dialogues on the NPC's website, as well as from a dozen of popular news portals, including Xinhuanet, on Tuesday.
BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 53.36 million Mu (about 3.56 million hectares) of crops in China had been affected by severe drought by Saturday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. The drought, mostly in China's southwestern provinces including Yunnan and Guizhou, had damaged crops and caused water shortage to both people and livestock.In Yunnan, the worst drought-stricken province, up to 31.48 million Mu of crops had been affected, with 11.53 million Mu seriously damaged and 6.16 million Mu destroyed. BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's large textile businesses took in 133.15 billion yuan (19.57 billion U.S. dollars) in profits in the first 11 months of last year, according to figures released by the China Textile Industry Association.The profits were up by 25.39 percent year on year, 36.40 percentage points more than that in the Jan.-Feb. period.The industry posted a total production value of 3.43 trillion yuan and 3.35 trillion yuan in sales value, each up by 9.71 percent and 9.82 percent as all major products saw production rise.The industry also witnessed a slow recovery in export. In the 11 months, garment export fell by 11.02 percent to 154.1 billion U.S. dollars, but the drop narrowed by 0.19 percentage points compared to the first 10 months.By contrast, domestic sale accounted for 79.89 percent in the total sales, up by 3.15 percent.
