BATAVIA, Ohio -- Some of Robin Hornberger's best students at West Clermont High School have two choices when it comes to college, and neither is ideal: Go into debt to afford the next phase of their education or abandon it altogether. "Our dream is that they can do what they want to do, that they can look at all the professions possible and pick their profession," she said. "But for some kids, it's just too expensive. … They would be having more debt per month than they would be making per month just starting a job."She wants to help them find a third option: Go to college with enough assistance -- no repayment required -- to make it manageable. That's why she's training every week and paying registration fees out of her own pocket to run in one marathon for each month of the next three years. She's already got two under her belt.Hornberger's marathons are a fundraiser and a way for her to draw attention to the difficult situation of economically disadvantaged students who want to better themselves through higher learning.Two months into 2018, she's raised ,000. Bringing calm to what could be a chaotic kitchen, Jacqueline Bonanno has years of experiencing leading women and men.“I think that a diverse workforce is the best thing you can have,” said Scott Henley, director of operations for Bonanno Concepts.Bonanno owns four restaurants across Colorado and is considered an inspiration for the next generation of aspiring women business owners.“I love it,” said a cook at Green Russell, a cocktail joint and restaurant. “I got a daughter, and I will be proud of her one day when she opens her own restaurant.”A new study shows more women are becoming business owners across the country.“For the last several years we’ve recognized the importance of the impact of women entrepreneurs,” said Allen Gutierrez with the U.S. Small Business Administration.He says between 2014 and 2019, the number of women-owned businesses increased 21% to almost 13 million nationwide.Gutierrez added the reasons in growth range from more opportunities to more women making a side hustle a legit business. Whatever the reasons, he projects even more women to become business owners“Certainly, it makes an impact in terms of the domino effect in their community,” Gutierrez said. “Then you see those increase and become even stronger and be an employer based in that aspect.”As more women own their own businesses, Bonanno reflects on balancing making a profit and parenthood.“There were times when I was nursing in the basement and lectured by a manager that that was inappropriate,” she said.The ability to overcome obstacles has others looking to Bonanno as a source of inspiration“It shows you that I can do it, too,” said Alexis Broswell, a line cook at Green Russell. “You just have to have the confidence.”While flattered by the compliment, Bannono is now focusing on nurturing her employees to go out and open their own businesses.“When I see what young women are doing right now, I think it’s breathtaking,” she said.Despite having big dreams, Bannono says when starting a business, that it's best to start small and grow from there.“Try to stay away from investors if you can,” she said. “There’s nothing but opportunity and it’s just going to get better and better.” 2203

Brittany and Corey Oswell were flying home from their Hawaiian honeymoon in 2016 when Brittany became dizzy and fainted.She came to soon after, but when she later collapsed in the plane's lavatory, a doctor on board who'd been helping her told the flight crew they needed to land quickly, to get her the proper medical treatment.American Airlines Flight 102 was about an hour and a half from Dallas-Fort Worth, its destination. Despite the doctor's warning, the crew stayed the course while the doctor and flight attendants tried to treat Brittany, who was 25 years old at the time. She was taken to a hospital immediately upon landing, but died three days later.Now her family is suing the airline for wrongful death.Brad Cranshaw, the attorney for Brittany's husband and her parents, told CNN Friday the family's main objective isn't winning a financial settlement.They want the airline to re-examine its policy and procedures so this won't happen to anyone else, he said."The family wants something (they) can't have, and that's Brittany back," Cranshaw said.
