SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Chargers dramatic win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday clinched the team its first appearance in the NFL Playoffs since 2013.Only this time, the Bolts are representing Los Angeles, not San Diego. “The players deserve it,” said San Diegan John Velarde. “The Spanoses? No.”Team owner Dean Spanos moved the team to Los Angeles after the 2016 season, after voters rejected the team’s bid for a downtown San Diego stadium. The move prompted some fans to disavow the Chargers forever, and it was easy the first year — the Bolts lost their first four games before battling back to finish 9-7. The Chargers are 11-3, and are tied with Kansas City for the best record in the AFC. There is a chance that the Chargers could have home-field advantage in the playoffs. “You feel a lot of mixed emotions, like excitement for who’s left on the team,” said Tim Hoover, a native San Diegan. “But at the same time it’s kind of like, they’re kind of dead to the world.”Still, there are die-hard Charger fans in San Diego. An estimated 250 packed into Cali Comfort Barbecue in Spring Valley to watch Thursday's 29-28, come-from-behind victory over the Chiefs. Owner Shawn Walchef, wearing a Chargers had and jacket, said he and many are sticking by the team.“It hurt that we couldn’t get something done as a city, it hurt that the organization couldn’t figure something out,” he said. “What can we control? It’s things we like to be happy about. We love cheering on our time, we love interacting with other Charger fans and that’s something that we’re going to keep doing." 1736

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego City Council members called Wednesday on California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and District Attorney Summer Stephan to investigate San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott's possible role in an alleged child sexual abuse cover-up at the San Diego Junior Theatre.Council members Scott Sherman and Vivian Moreno sent a jointly written letter to Becerra and Stephan imploring them to investigate allegations made by attorney Matt Valenti that Elliott improperly shared information on the case with then-Junior Theatre Board member Gil Cabrera, who Valenti claims tried to silence the case's whistleblowers."We are writing to respectfully request your respective offices' review and consideration for appropriate action, as the authority to investigate these complaints falls under the jurisdiction of your departments," their letter states. "We believe a timely resolution to the matter is in the best interest of all parties."RELATED: San Diego Junior Theatre teacher convicted of sex with underage studentHilary Nemchik, spokeswoman for the city attorney's office, suggested Valenti's allegations against Elliott are a political attack intended to benefit his lawyer, Cory Briggs, who filed paperwork last month signaling his intent to run against her for city attorney."Mr. Valenti has repackaged allegations he sent to the City Council, the District Attorney and the Attorney General more than two years ago," Nemchik said in an emailed statement. "If any law enforcement agency thinks further review of the Junior Theatre is warranted, we support that decision."In 2017, shortly before former Junior Theatre teacher Eric von Metzke pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, Valenti sent an email summary to Elliott, Becerra and Stephan outlining his claims that Cabrera tampered with the investigation into sexual abuse allegations at the theater.Elliott, Valenti alleges, sent that email to Cabrera, disclosing sensitive information in the process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A day after California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. The state's previous high for deaths was set Saturday with 225.On Tuesday, Newsom ordered 5,000 body bags during a surge in deaths over the past week, averaging over 160 per day."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said Tuesday. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom also said that 60 refrigerated storage units are ready to be mobilized across California should hospitals become overwhelmed with virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. "That should be sobering. I don't want ... to scare folks, but this is a deadly disease. And we need to be mindful of where we are in this current journey together to the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A graduate program at the University of San Diego that teaches peacebuilding will evaluate whether or not to send students back to Culiacán, Mexico. The concern comes after Thursday's bloody battle involving Mexican federal troops and the son of notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.The USD Kroc School's Trans-Border Institute has been regularly taking graduate students to Culiacán for the last five years, offering seminars and certificate programs in peacebuilding that have had an impact on the region, said program director Ev Meade."It's one of the only states in Mexico that's actually improved with respect to violence and was on the upswing until 3:30 yesterday afternoon and now all bets are off," Meade said in an interview.Meade was scheduled to speak at a conference on Friday but had to cancel the trip abruptly when cartel shooters laid siege to the city.The incident began when members of the Mexican National Guard patrolling a neighborhood in Culiacan and were ambushed by members of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Among those members of the criminal gang was Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of "El Chapo" Guzman.Cartel forces blocked roads with burning cars and demanded the release of El Chapo's son, who had been captured by Mexican security forces.Violence spread across the city until authorities suspended operations and released Ovidio Guzman Lopez.At least seven people were killed in the battle, one Mexican National Guard member, one civilian, and five cartel members, according to Security Minister Alfonso Durazo."It was terrifying. I had friends who were trapped in their offices. Other friends who were trapped in restaurant bathrooms," said Meade.The USD program in Culiacán has trained hundreds of local activists, public officials, and entrepreneurs in peacebuilding and social innovation, according to the Kroc School.Thursday's violence showed an entire militia of criminals could descend on the city in less than an hour, Meade said. He and school leaders are now weighing whether to send students back."I mean this is the point of a school of peace studies to go to places in conflict and help. Apply our best knowledge and methods. So have not given up," he said. "But our calculations as to what is safe and what is not -- a lot of that stuff remains to be seen." 2333
