NONG'AN, Jilin, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the approach of a new round of torrential rains, the country roads in flood-ravaged Nong'an County in northeast China were packed with villagers fleeing their homes Wednesday.Traveling aboard tractors, trucks, mini-buses, and motorcycles, and carrying belongings such as quilts and chicken, thousands of people set off on a journey of exodus.Up to 27,000 villagers living downstream from the Songhua River in Jilin Province need to be evacuated as downpours are expected to batter Nong'an from Wednesday evening until Friday, said Wang Wei, deputy Communist Party chief of the county."Fresh downpours may lead to the breach of riverbanks and two reservoirs upstream would have to open sluices to discharge water, which would threaten the lives of residents downstream," Wang said."The mass evacuation began in the early morning today. By now, 18,000 people have moved to safety. GUANLING, Guizhou, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged local government to use all resources to rescue victims of a landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province.Rescuers should save the lives of the victims and treat the wounded using all possible means, said Hui during an inspection tour of the disaster-hit area from late Monday to Tuesday.He also called for the utmost efforts to properly resettle people affected by the landslide and sounded caution regarding additional landslides.He said all areas prone to landslides should be examined closely and nearby residents must be evacuated immediately upon any sign of an impending landslide.Further, information about the disaster relief efforts should be made public in a timely, objective, open and transparent manner, said Hui.The landslide occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Dazhai Village, Gangwu Township of Guanling County, burying 107 people from 38 families. Rescuers said their chances of survival were slim.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's health chiefs Tuesday renewed their commitment to providing the country with iodized salt and refuted concerns of excessive iodine intake.Chen Rui, an official with China's Health Ministry, said at a press conference that the benefits of iodized salt still outweighed the concerns of excessive iodine, citing the results of nationwide risk assessment of iodine intake led by the ministry.The assessment was carried out in response to claims from media and medical experts that some regions, coastal areas in particular, reported cases of excessive iodine intake since last year.Chen said iodized salt was still essential in China.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient.Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.Chen Junshi, a research fellow with China CDC involved in the assessment, said even in coastal areas the risk of iodine deficiency still loomed larger than excessive intake.

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said Thursday every primary and middle school student in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County will have new textbooks when the new school semester starts."We have asked publishing houses to rush to print and prepare textbooks for Zhouqu. All of them promised to have them ready by the start of the new semester," ministry spokeswoman Xu Mei said Thursday.Schools in Zhouqu in northwest China's Gansu Province are scheduled to begin the autumn semester on Aug. 16.Some 334,075 volumes of textbooks and support material for Zhouqu's primary and middle school students were kept in a storehouse belonging to the local Xinhua Bookstore that was destroyed by the massive mudslides.Primary and middle schools in Zhouqu need 180,000 textbooks for the new semester, the Ministry of Education said.Xu said the publishing houses will send the textbooks to the provincial Xinhua Bookstore in Gansu before Aug. 14.The ministry also vowed to ensure the supply of textbooks to other areas severely hit by natural disasters, including flood-hit Jilin Province in northeastern China.In addition, Xu Mei said poor students from disaster-hit areas entering college will receive preferential treatment in enrolment and in application for loans.The ministry has asked colleges to investigate the financial situation of freshmen from the disaster-hit areas.The death toll due to the massive mudslides in Zhouqu in the early hours of Sunday had, as of Wednesday, risen to 1,117, with 627 still missing.
