HONOLULU, United States, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that China will deepen economic structural reform, grow a green economy, enhance protection of intellectual property rights and open wider to the outside world.Hu made the remarks at the CEO summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.Hu noted that while China's economy has grown steadily and the country is opening wider to the outside world, China still faces the major challenge of unbalanced, uncoordinated and unsustainable development.China, he said, will continue to deepen reform and opening-up, improve people's livelihood and promote sustained, steady and fairly fast economic growth and social harmony and stability.Hu then laid out a four-point proposal to achieve the goals, with the first being that China will deepen economic structural reform and improve business and investment environment.Second, China will honor its commitment to growing a green economy and promoting the conservation culture, Hu said.From 2011 to 2015, China's investment in the environmental sector will double that of the previous five years to about 3.1 trillion yuan (about 488.5 billion U.S. dollars), Hu said, adding that China's green industry is a key area for foreign investment.Third, China will step up protection of intellectual property rights and make itself a country driven by innovation, he said.China will vigorously boost scientific and technological innovation and turn enterprises into major players of such innovation, while further improving the legal system for intellectual property rights protection, he said.Fourth, China will open wider to the outside world and take an active part in global economic governance and regional cooperation, Hu said.China, he said, will give equal importance to import and export and focus more on increasing import while maintaining a stable level of export.Noting that China's development constitutes an important force driving regional and global economic growth, Hu said that China will work together with others to create a better future for the Asia-Pacific region.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China canceled over one-third of all official ceremonies, seminars and forums last year in a bid to avoid extravagance or corruption in the use of public resources.Some 2,549 such activities proposed by governments or public institutions, or 37.7 percent of the total applications, which were deemed "ceremonial" and "unnecessary," were cut, saving 1.22 billion yuan (about 193.39 million U.S. dollars), said an official statement released Sunday.The statement was issued by the State Council's Office for Rectifying Malpractices, a ministry-level inter-agency supervisory body dedicated to eliminating administrative irregularities and abuse of power in government agencies, public institutions and major service sectors.Last year's inspections focused on activities co-funded by ministries and local governments, the statement said.The Chinese government agreed with the public that the soaring number of official celebrations, seminars and forums would cost plenty of money and manpower and exacerbate corrupt behaviors.In March, the State Council, or China's Cabinet, ordered 98 ministries and ministry-level government organs to make public their budgets and expenditures on official overseas visits, public vehicles and official receptions -- the "three public consumptions" that had triggered widespread public concern.Premier Wen Jiabao also repeatedly urged the country's government agencies to reduce administrative expenses, including cutting the number of meetings and documents printed.Official figures indicate that the country's crackdown on various forms of extravagant spending by officials saved the country 5.7 billion yuan in 2010.A blue book on China's conferences published in November estimated that the total output of the country's conference industry had reached nearly 1 trillion yuan. BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Court vowed to harshly crack down on bribery, abuse of power and malpractice in food safety cases as such illegalities have become top concerns for Chinese people.Chinese courts at all levels had heard 173 cases and sentenced 255 people in relation to the production and sale of unsafe food in the first ten months of this year, Sun Jungong, spokesman of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), said Thursday."China has seen a growing number of food safety cases in recent years with increasing difficulties for investigation," Sun said.According to the SPC, Chinese courts handled 84 food safety cases in 2008, and 148 and 119 cases in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The number of food safety violators sentenced in the past three years totaled 101, 208 and 162, respectively.The SPC also promulgated four typical food safety illegalities exposed in recent years.In the latest food safety scandal, four people in central China's Henan province were prosecuted for the crime of "endangering public security by using dangerous means" in July after they were found to have produced and sold clenbuterol, a poisonous feed additive that pig farms use to boost the output of lean meat.The spokesman said the SPC will strengthen cooperation with police and procuratorial organs to improve the efficiency of dealing with, and preventing food safety crimes.

BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's railways will carry 235 million passengers during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush, up 6.1 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Railways said Friday.A daily average of 5.88 million people will make trains trips from Jan. 8 to Feb. 16, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Economic hubs such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou and the inland provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui and Hunan will see the most activity during the period, as millions of rural migrant workers and students head home for family reunions, according to the statement.The ministry has arranged for extra trains in anticipation of the rush, the statement said, but added that "the conflict remains between passenger demand and railway capacity."Railway authorities have long been under pressure to increase capacity and improve ticketing services, as many citizens find it extremely hard to secure a single ticket during major holidays.The ministry has begun allowing customers to book their tickets online or by phone to ease the ordeal of buying tickets. NANJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in China's eastern Jiangsu Province on Sunday intensified their search for the suspect in an armed robbery in the province.Police have increased patrol and initiated a blanket search for the male suspect, who shot and robbed a man in front of a bank in Nanjing, the provincial capital, on Friday, the provincial public security bureau said in a statement.In Nanjing, special armed police and police cars have blocked major roads, with many others searching in public places. Two helicopters are used to facilitate the search.The provincial police authorities also offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (15,850 U.S. dollars) for information leading to the arrest of the man believed to be in his 40s.The suspect shot a man who had just finished withdrawing 200,000 yuan in front of a bank on Nanjing's Dongmen Street at 9:50 a.m. Friday.
