CHENGDU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spreading grassland fire in a mountainous Tibetan region in southwest China proved deadly when it trapped soldiers and local residents trying to put out the blaze. By Sunday night, at least 22 have been killed and three severely burned, local officials said.The wild fire was raging through a grassland atop a plateau some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province. About 500 mu (33.3 hectares) of the grassland has burned, while 200 mu (13 hectares) is still on fire, a source with local fire-fighters told Xinhua."The fire line stretches several kilometers long. As it darkens at night, most fire-fighters have retreated to the camps." Yang Hao, a senior local fire-fighting official told reporters. Three of the severely injured have been rushed to hospitals.Gusting winds ebbed anew late Sunday night, providing favorable conditions to put out the flames, fire-fighters said.

BERLIN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- 2010 is an important year for the development of Sino-German relations. That's as the two countries have made big achievements on politics, economy, culture and society, sending their bilateral relations to a "new historical point."German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited China in July and met Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao. During her visit, China and Germany issued the second communique in two countries' history, which was considered a historical event by both sides.The Sino-German relations have entered a new phase, Merkel said. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will increase grain supplies to meet people's needs and stabilize market prices, the nation's grain authorities said Friday.The government will also sell a set amount of cooking vegetable oil and soybeans from its reserves beginning next week, in addition to the weekly policy-oriented sales of wheat, rice and corn that has already begun, the State Administration of Grain said in a statement posted on its website Friday.The authority will also send groups of staff to major grain production regions to inspect and guide purchases of autumn grain and regulate business practices, according to the statement.The move was in line with the government's efforts to protect farmers' interests and maintain moderate prices in the grain market, the statement said.China's State Council, or the Cabinet, said Wednesday that it would impose temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials when necessary, and urged local authorities to offer temporary subsidies to needy families.It also ordered efforts be implemented to ensure market supplies and strengthen market supervision.These steps were introduced after China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. TIANJIN, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A subway train of six cars being assembled rolled off a production line Friday at a production base in north China's Tianjin Municipality, according to China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR).The subway train is the first of the kind ever produced at the CSR Tianjin Industrial Park, said CSR's chairman, Zhao Xiaogang.The train, designed to run at a speed of 80 km per hour, has a holding capacity of 1,800 passengers. It will will be used in Tianjin's Subway Line 3, which will begin service in 2011.The production base, with an initial investment of 3 billion yuan (455 million U.S. dollars), can produce 100 to 200 trains a year.
