PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A top official says federal militarized officers will remain in Portland, Oregon, until attacks on the U.S. courthouse cease. The mayors of six U.S. cities are appealing to Congress to make it illegal for the U.S. government to deploy militarized agents to cities that don’t want them. The mayors of Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Washington wrote to leaders of the U.S. House and Senate pushing for limits on agent deployments. Early Monday, U.S. agents repeatedly fired what appeared to be tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls at protesters.Portland Police also reported that Molotov cocktails and firearms have been confiscated near the courthouse. Two people were reportedly detained near the courthouse on Sunday as at least one gun shot was heard near the presence of federal agents. 861
POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Anti-Defamation League Tuesday announced a ,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects who reportedly painted a swastika on the side of a Poway home the first night of Hanukkah. The announcement was made following a vigil Monday night where members of the Poway community came together in solidarity to rally against anti-Semitic hate crime. Shawn Seibert, who lives in the home with his mother, said he heard noises late Sunday night. When he walked outside, he told 10News he saw two people running away. He then noticed the swastika painted on the side of the home and chemicals poured on the family’s car. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The mayor of Portland is demanding that President Donald Trump remove militarized federal agents he deployed to the city after some detained people on streets distant from federal property they were sent to protect. Democratic Gov. Kate Brown said Trump is looking for a confrontation in the hopes of winning political points elsewhere. "This political theater from President Trump has nothing to do with public safety. The President is failing to lead this nation. Now he is deploying federal officers to patrol the streets of Portland in a blatant abuse of power by the federal government," Brown wrote on Twitter. "I told Acting Secretary Wolf that the federal government should remove all federal officers from our streets. His response showed me he is on a mission to provoke confrontation for political purposes. He is putting both Oregonians and local law enforcement officers in harm’s way."This, coming from the same President who used tear gas to clear out peaceful protesters in Washington, DC to engineer a photo opportunity. Trump is looking for a confrontation in Oregon in the hopes of winning political points in Ohio or Iowa," she added. The protests following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis have often devolved into violent clashes between smaller groups and the police. The unrest has caused divisions in a city that prides itself on its activism and progressive reputation. 1441
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at strengthening child-welfare programs nationwide. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar hailed the order as a step toward major reforms. The goals include curtailing child maltreatment, strengthening adoption programs and encouraging support for at-risk families so fewer children are placed in foster care. The order comes as child-protection agencies across the U.S. struggle with effects related to the coronavirus pandemic, including disrupted family court proceedings and new difficulties recruiting foster parents. 597
President Donald Trump announced he is pushing back his first rally since March to June 20 after facing criticism for holding it during Juneteenth. The rally was originally scheduled for June 19.The rally will take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city that saw extensive violence in 1921 as the city’s prominent black population were brutally victimized as part of mass hate crimes.“Many of my African American friends and supporters have reached out to suggest that we consider changing the date out of respect for this Holiday, and in observance of this important occasion and all that it represents. I have therefore decided to move our rally to Saturday, June 20th, in order to honor their requests,” Trump tweeted.Trump said that the rally had 200,000 requests for tickets.Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day, is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.African-Americans and others celebrate the day much like the Fourth of July with parties and picnics with families and friends. 1027
