UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- China has made steady progress in containing the spread of illegal publications and cracking down on the dissemination of lewd content through the Internet and mobile phones in 2010, according to the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications.The office has recently disclosed the following facts and figures about the related efforts China has made so far this year:-- Around 44.37 million copies of illegal publications, including 981,000 copies of lewd content, 37.35 million pirated copies, some 3.93 million illegal copies of newspapers and magazines, among others, have been confiscated across China.-- More than 16,000 cases, including over 10,000 ones of pirated publications, 1,669 cases involving pornography, and 371 cases involving fake journalists, news reports or media outlets, have been uncovered this year.-- China has shut down more than 60,000 porn websites since launching a crackdown in December 2009.-- Law enforcers across China during a campaign launched in April had destroyed a total of 36.39 million copies of pirated or illegal publications, audio and video discs.-- The office has received over 170,000 tip-offs, mostly about the online or cellphone-based spreading of porn content this year and 534 people have been rewarded 544,000 yuan (81,964 dollars) for the information provided.-- Authorities in Zhongshan City of southern Guangdong Province shut down a huge disc-producing outfit with five production lines and confiscated 3.87 million illegal discs.

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen of 17 Vietnamese crew members were saved by a Chinese rescue team after strong winds sank the Vietnamese ship, the Hung Cuong 168, near Minjiang estuary in the East China Sea on Friday evening, the Chinese rescue center said.According to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC), the Vietnamese ship, which was overloaded with 5,200 tonnes of stone materials, had an engine breakdown this afternoon and overturned at around 5:00 p.m. due to high winds, with 17 crew members falling into the sea.Being alerted about the accident, China's East China Sea Rescue Bureau and the local maritime search and rescue center in the coastal Fujian Province sent professional salvage vessels and helicopters to the scene where they rescued 13 sailors, as of 6:18 p.m.The rescue team is still searching for the remaining four sailors, according to the CMSRC.
